Question Brand New 2018 BRZ - Check Engine Light at 85 Miles

Maybe I'm worrying too much but I wanted to get the perspective of people here. I am more than a little concerned that this is occurring on a brand new car. Have you guys ever heard of something like this happening? Can anyone give insight into what might cause P0300?
  • 02/11/18 - bought a brand new BRZ Limited (ODO: 6)
  • 02/24/18 - turned car on in the morning, check engine light is on (ODO: 85)
  • 02/24/18 - dropped car back at the dealership, was told I have to wait until Monday when their master tech can look at it
  • 02/26/18 - Error code is P0300. They still don't really know what's wrong, and they want to get Subaru involved for more information
  • 02/27/18 - "valves are too tight, it will need a valve adjustment so the motor will need to come off... going to need it for two weeks"
  • 03/20/18 - they keep pushing the completion date back... current estimate is this Friday but I have my doubts
  • 03/22/18 - they don't have the right part (shim or something) needed to do the adjustment and have to order it; delayed again
  • 03/28/18 - car was supposedly ready to go; picked it up and drove it all of 100 yards before I knew something was wrong (could hear an air-y piston-y sound on throttle); they stripped a bolt or something and there was a leak in the headers/exhaust system
  • 03/29/18 - finally got the car back today, 33 DAYS LATER
What a miserable experience. I'll be calling corporate tomorrow to see if I can get additional warranty coverage.

Final Update (hopefully):
Serramonte Subaru did not seem to care much at all about this whole fiasco. Subaru of America, however, offered me three very reasonable options:
  1. Subaru buys the car back for full purchase price
  2. Subaru replaces the car with a brand new identical model
  3. I keep the car, but Subaru issues a $5,000 rebate and a 7-year / 100,000-mile $0 deductible Gold Plus Added Security Plan
I went with #3

P0300 is a random misfire.

Heres a search of the forums for the code:
https://www.google.com/search?q=P030...w=1600&bih=786

Searching around finds a lot of threads related to this issue, but usually including another DTC with the p0300. It could be a loose bolt on the DI computer or even a bad coil pack that was defective on delivery, or a spark plug that grenaded itself due to a defect. Also in this thread although there was no reply from op:
http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=105387

However in his last post he said Toyota believed an exhaust valve spring went out of spec. The above only occurred on stock cars like yours the rest occured on FI cars so I ruled them out.

It'd be difficult for anyone online to diagnose it except for the techs with physical connection to the car, but you can be sure they'll take care of it especially on a brand new car. Probably already why they escalated the issue with Subaru to have a look at it. Keep us updated!

Thanks for the reply - I accidentally posted this under the wrong forum to start which is probably why I didn't see the related threads.

I'll post updates as soon as I hear more

Well, THAT sucks for a new car ......

mrs humfrz's Saturn pulled that stunt about a year ago. I unplugged the battery for a couple of minutes, then plugged it back in.

The CEL and code went away and hasn't returned. I just figured the car just hiccupped ...... maybe I just got lucky ...... not recommending this ...... just sayen .......

Leave the car at the dealer have them give you a free rental until it's fixed.

Looks like for you it was a valve issue, hopefully it doesn't instate a full on recall or tsb because that it odd for a new car. Somewhere on the factory line someone or some robot may have done the valve lash wrong.

I'm having the same issue with my BRZ as well. My car was new and had just came in like a week ago. The moment I took it off the lot and drove 1 mile, the check engine light popped up. My car is at the Subaru dealership and I haven't drove my new car in a week now. Luckily, they're taking care of all of it and gave me a loaner.

What's your current situation now?
