In Japan it was always called "86" since the top trim is known as "GT Limited".

And "GT" is nothing more than a throwback to the 2000GT name.

The ONLY reason this car is called an "86" is for marketing purposes. It gives the enthusiasts something to hang a reference on. It doesn't share any styling cues with the AE86, nor does it share any technical inspiration other than being RWD. It's not any more a relative of the AE86 than a second step-cousin twice removed.

The style of this car is based on the 2000GT. The underpinnings are new. But if Toyota had said, "We're bringing back the 2000GT," the majority of potential buyers would have said, "The what?" Then, since the 2000GTs that still exist are going for $1M or more, people would have concluded that the new car would be expensive. So they hung the 86 on it to imply that it would be cheap.

This forced "lineage" is goofy.

Almost as goofy as a bunch of skinny white boys, Latinos or non Japanese Asians using words like "Zenki and Kouki" based on the simple fact they own a car built in Japan.

And they originally sold for the equivalent of $48,000 in today's dollars. And was considered a high priced halo car. Wish I was alive and had $6,800 in 1967.

It does share one styling cue...the dash clock.

I was just answering whoever asked why the "GT" was dropped from "GT86" for the twins.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_86

Toyota 86 in Asia, South Africa, North America (from August 2016), South America and Australia;[1] GT86 in Europe; both of the preceding names in New Zealand; FT86 in Nicaragua and Jamaica;
Subaru BRZ worldwide;
Scion FR-S in the US and Canada. After August 2016 the Scion FR-S will be renamed as the Toyota 86.[2][3]

I'm Cantonese and to me Zenki and Kouki is basically 前期 and 後期 in Chinese that are stupidly similar phonetically with the same meanings (duh where do you think Japanese people originated from).

What's more goofy is the Japanese that can't even simply explain the meaning and use of "san" to the gwai lo here.

JDM4LIFEYO in reality has been around a lot longer outside of Japan than the interweb would have you believe. Yet back in the 80's in Japan it was mostly USA4LIFEBAKA!

BTW here's 86's sexy cruising ancestor (check out the 86's new steering wheel inspiration):

"Spiritual successor" is a LOLtastic marketing term. Nothing more. This car has absolutely nothing to do with those cars other than the campaign a marketing team put together to convince you there was a connection.
