Why can someone drive off with my BRZ Limited

I hopped in my BRZ Limited and pushed to start. I left the car and asked a friend of mine to drive off. I wanted to see if the car would shut down the moment he put it in gear.

Well he was able to drive off and take it for a 3-4 mile drive.

I thought there would be some kind of countermeasure to not allow someone to drive off if they were not in possession of the key fob.

It sounds like the lesson is not to leave your car unattended when you have the engine running.

Think you should choose your friends more wisely.

It'll let you drive off, most cars I've driven with that feature will flash a warning light on the dash saying that the key is not present. Doesn't stop you from doing anything, though.

It won't restart. This is actually outlined in the owner's manual.

Yuppp.

So long as the car is on, it will keep running.

The moment it's shut off and the key isn't in the car, the car won't be able to start again.

Chalk one up for the aftermarket remote starters.

My car will shut off as soon as the door is closed (or the brake is pressed) if the key is not in the ignition.

Would you rather the car shut down entirely when it got out of range of the remote? When it's already in motion and moving? Would you like to be responsible for the lawsuits that result from the traffic accidents and kids being run over that would entail?

Reminds me of the term: "The Lights Are On But Nobody Is Home".

For those not familar, Subsitute 'Ignition Is' for 'Lights Are".

GM cars with keyless (at least some of them) allow you to customize the behavior - you can choose to do as this did (keep running, but not restart after shutdown), or turn off by itself after some interval.
