I would recommend the Shorai tender. Plugs right into the port covered by the grey plug between the terminals and it can give you a battery status.

Also since it hasn't been mentioned yet I would strongly recommend having something like an OBDII reader to monitor battery voltage. It's very important to monitor that with any Lithium Iron battery technology. A typical lead-acid battery is fine running at 12V but as soon as you drop a Lithium Iron battery below 12.8 you can have permanent damage to the battery and it will never hold a charge.... I found this out the hard way twice after doing that to two Shorai Batteries on my Formula SAE car.

I haven't gotten it yet for my FR-S, but I have had it for my Evo. I live in a warm climate, and the coldest it has gotten here was 61F, so a high CCA wasn't really needed for the Evo, and I think should be fine for the FR-S. Also I've never had sounds, so I don't worry about draining the battery much.

As ToyoburuBRZ wrote, use the Shorai tender. I used to tend mine every three weeks or so. Hope this helps, and I hope to get mine soon and will report back some more.

IIRC there are only a few battery manufacturers in the US (2 or 3 I think). Your Shorai may be a relabeled Eastern Penn ATV battery.

I put a powersports battery in my sti a while ago. It lasted about a year and didn't cost me too much. I did have it hooked up to a battery tender.

You are thinking about very different things. Shorai are a newer lithium iron type battery. Not a variant of lead acid. My battery was made in China with Japanese oversight.

Update...battery is working just fine. Had a few 40 degree mornings lately. Cranks up without a hiccup.

I'll be ordering an LFX21L6-BS12 in about a week or so. What all am I going to have to buy to make it work, and what else should I buy to make life better?

What exactly do you mean by tending it? Just taking it out of the car and charging it? What's the reason for doing that?

I'm going to keep my factory battery, just in case the little 21 ever gives me trouble. Is there something I should do to the factory battery to ensure it has a long storage life?

Shorai battery, Shorai battery charger, battery tray kit. Done. Make sure to keep voltage reading closer to 14V then 13V.

Oh, and I meant to mention that I'll be DIY'ing my own tray/tie down contraption. So it'll connect right up to the factory battery terminals?

Also, regarding the battery:
It's actually not 36AH, its real capacity is about 13AH. Shorai uses a marketing trick that says their batteries are 36AH equivalent, in terms of how much amperage they put out. Pretty lame, I was actually kind of pissed when I heard of this information, capacity should be capacity, not some weird equivalent.

That being said, I currently have two of our FRS/BRZ setups out in the wild. I had a friend take a 2 week vacation with no problems starting the car. Also, if you guys know Moto Miwa, he's reported being away for a week and having no problems starting the car.

All in all, I have about 60 of the LFX36L3-BS12 battery packages in NSXes, with no reported problems.

I've been using a LFX36L3-BS12 for almost a year now and it's been great. I've also allowed my personal car to sit for 10 days with no problems, and have had a customer go 16 days, although it's not something I would recommend.

I've done a good amount of testing of these batteries, so let me know if you have any questions.

So is the parasitic draw on the 86 pretty low compared to some other power suckers out there? I know a few factory cars that would kill a pc680 in a week. So being able to put a tiny Shorai in and have it last 2 weeks and fire up sounds like good news.

It's recommended that you put a battery tender or a shorai battery conditioner on if you're going to leave it sit for that long (or take out the battery and throw it in the freezer... totally serious)

That being said, my S2k has sat for 6+ weeks and started with the Shorai, and I use a a smaller version (27AH, not 36AH). YMMV, since the BRZ/FRS is a different car.
