It would take some work to swap it over for virtually no gains. Just grab a high flow aftermarket filter for your 16 and call it a day.

I'm not certain, but I'd imagine it likely needs a tune. The MY17+ MT has a different (red) intake manifold in addition to the different airbox and filter design. The airbox being different leads me to believe that the MAF sensor position may be different. I've never directly compared, but my guess is a tune would be required for you to see any benefit, otherwise any differences would be learned out by the ECU.

Also, I think just throwing a Blitz or K&N filter into your normal MY16 airbox would be a better choice anyway.

Don't think the maf would be in a substantially different position and I doubt a tune would be needed but that is beside the point. The total changes in engine, intake, mainfold and exhaust with the tune that goes with them was a whopping 5HP so just changing the intake will gain nothing even with a tune. Could gain as much leaving everything as it is and just doing a tune.

You may or may not need a new tune, unless someone has done some logging and confirm.

You can log AF short and long term fuel trims and see how much the ECU is compensating to hit its target AFR.

Markville toyota looked at me like I was an idiot for asking for SU00306405. They basically said all 86's use 17801yzz03 - that's the only part number they have on file - which a google search shows it being a corolla filter. I guess I'll just suck it up and go Subaru tomorrow.

Very odd. The number is right so I have no idea why their system won't pull it up.

Disclaimer: unsure on what the filter material is made from, from Googling P/N's it seems like most are cotton, if it is cotton you will be going backwards.

Eco Gard XA10586, Ryco A1489 and Wesfil WA1144 all seem to be typical paper element for 17+ OEM manual.

My local parts store has the Ryco's, I've never been a fan of oiled filters, plus for the cost of a K&N I can get 5 paper elements, no cleaning, no oil, just open and replace twice a year.

Opinions may vary

I'm on the same boat as you, I went to check out Partsource yesterday as well. They only stocked FRAM brand and the Fram one also uses the same filter between all 86/frs/brz model year and tranny options. I guess noone wants to stock something for a M/T car with only 2 MY's.

I doubt that they have picked up the differences and updated the catalogs.

Off the top of my head I can't recall another vehicle doing something so similar in regards to changing an air filter for a different transmission option.

How about the oil bath filter I had on my 58 Chev? Only took almost a litre.

Called Heffner Toyota today and asked specifically for that part number. They had to special order it in...there's 3 in all of Ontario.
