I was outside of a restaurant with a buddy while he was having a smoke and there were lots of people on the street and we just kept watching these two guys come up to the front, then back, then squat and look under then peep into the windows for like 10 minutes straight... eventually we went over and they just couldn't figure out what the car was

not in general media.

i heard rumors of the 86 on car sites only, but it was never toyota's NASCAR vehicle like the supra.

i've only ever seen 1 tv commercial once for an fr-s. what's the supra up to?

Then again, I'm red, very shiny, with 18" hyper silver concave wheels and on a lowered suspension, so the whole package is very striking. I routinely watch people huddled around my car outside a coffee shop trying to figure out what it is. Had people shining torches inside the windows at night to catch a logo (creepy). It's an extremely eye-catching thing, the 86, if you tastefully mod it to complement its stylistic strengths. IMO, stock, this car is a bit dinky looking. Too high, with under-sized wheels that are too far inboard and a face that is just too aggressive for the rest of itself. Do what I did though, and all of a sudden it all comes together as one cohesive and attractive package. Oh and my seats are tan... I think that creates some quasi-lux look
I'm fully stock with a Halo coloured car right now, and I've only ever seen white, black, and blue ft86s around where I'm at. The car is very uncommon here, having seen maybe six or seven in my 10 months of ownership and I've had literally one couple acknowledge it in that time, haha. Most sporty cars here range from American muscle and German performance cars (BMW Porsche), alongside more than a few Ferraris and the occasional kids with Aventadors. For most people here, we're barely a step above a commuter car, if that. There's probably not as big of a car culture (or preference for JDM vehicles) and the buyers of sports cars here tend to be more of the stereotypical "Corvette" demographic. Maybe my area's just a little boring

I’d like to see one in person before making a final judgement. But at $92k AUD drive away vs roughly $40k AUD drive away for an 86/BRZ is it worth $50k more? Hypothetical, if you won a raffle and it was either an 86/BRZ + $50k or a Supra, which would you take? I’m biased of course but for that amount of extra coin it’d want to be good!

That's a good way to look at it and gives you a sense on how only is a Supra not that good of a deal but it just doesn't look as good for more than double a twin.
I'd take the 86/BRZ and our $36k US and spend maybe half of the cash to get it up to same performance, add in some suspension/brake/wheel/tire/etc. parts and still have enough left over for like $20k in hookers.

Smart sales lot strategy. How do you make an 86 look like a beautiful sports car at a bargain price? Park a supra next to it.

Nice looking FR-S, especially with your choice of mods on it.

The basic shape and proportions on the Supra are solid, but no matter how many times I see it, the front half of the car is just awkward (esp parked next to an FR-S). Really wish Toyota could clean up the lines a bit in the front.

Yeah I agree, I like the 86 in this shot, black with gold or bronze wheels are a good combo. There is an FD on Speedhunters that has this combo, one of the most tastefully modded cars I’ve seen.

I know it is an optical illusion but that car makes the 86 look big in some of those photos.

If you showed these photos to a rando on the street and asked them to guess the model year, they would say the Supra is a concept car from the future and the FR-S is early 2000s or the late 90s.

I think it is mostly the tail shots that do it. The Supra has such a dramatic rear end that makes it futuristic compared to the frumpy FR-S and its Altezza taillights.

Saw one of these in the wild today, white one. They definitely have presence and look better in person than the photos. I think someone must have been test driving it as there is a Toyota dealership not far from my place. Might duck in tomorrow and see if one is there.

EDIT: Wandered into a Toyota dealership, they’re not on display in showrooms here (AUS) until next year. No test drives, online order only.

I agree that the new Supra definitely looks much better in person than in photos! There were two new 2020 Supras at my local 8/6 day meet! I love how new Supra keeps the old Supra font on the badge.
