Aftermarket Steering Wheel Questions

Hey, guys! New to the forums and the 86. Got my 13 FR-S about 3 months ago and would like to go with an after market steering wheel.

I'm currently looking at either a used woodgrain Nardi wheel for $150 without a hub, or quick release. I also have a buddy that would sell me an NRG woodgrain with a Momo hub & NRG quick release.

Is the used Nardi a good buy?
Is there any use of the civic hub & quick release or is it car specific and I have to buy them for the FRS?
Can I potentially sell them and make any of the $100 back and if not would $100 be a good buy for an NRG wheel?

Thank you for any input you can give!Name: 20170608_151428.png

The hub will be car specific. You can check on NRG website, and probably others as well, for the part number for our specific platform.

As Michael have mentioned, you need to get a hub specific to your car (though most cars share the same hub with other cars within their own make). NRG has a hub that will fit our cars, SRK-125H.
The quick release is usable though as NRG quick release are universal.
Just remember to be careful with the removal process of your steering wheel. One mistake, and you may damage your clockspring, causing a huge headache with ABS and traction control.
Personally, I would grab the Nardi steering wheel as their quality and feel are perfect. I use a used Nardi Challenge in my setup and it feels amazing. I also own an NRG wood steering wheel, but it's so bad compare to the Nardi.

with these aftermarket wheels, aren't you more likely to die in an accident cause you don't have an airbag? Serious question. Wouldn't it be blunt force trauma cause your head smacks on the steering wheel (or elsewhere?). Am I the only one pondering this? I would like a deep dish JDM steering wheel as much as anyone, but can't help but feel concerned.

you fix that by getting a fixed seat and racing harness I think. I personally wouldn't want to take something away that's going to save my life...

Awrsome! Thanks so much for all the replies. It's really helpful to see such great response.

So final verdict: Nardi or NRG?

Also @StraightOuttaCanadaEh .. in these little cars if we crash we're gonna die! Regardless of the airbag being there or not. Haha

That is incredibly false. The crashes people walk away from in this car are pretty incredible.

I don't care which wheel you choose, don't spread misinformation about safety.

Very impressed with the crumple zone, but you'd still hit your head on the steering wheel and splatter your brain against your skull... quite fatally I'm afraid. Harnesses would help, but that means a new seat... sigh

I'd get the steering wheel that would hurt the least if I were to headbutt it.

lol.

youre more likely to die driving a classic car but that doesnt stop people, not everyone drives their car everyday so for some it really isnt an issue.

There used to be another hub that "fits" the BRZ/FRS, SRK-120H, but it did not have a slot for clock spring to fit through, so people had to remove them. NRG has remedied that with the new 125H, which is what I have in my setup.

Regarding safety, it's definitely true that by swapping out for a QR/aftermarket wheel, it will be more dangerous in the event of a severe crash. It becomes even more of an issue when aftermarket seats are used with stock seat belts, eliminating the side airbags.
