Quick update:

I adjusted my clutch catch point to a more reasonable level for myself (4/10 from floor), and I'm still able to shift at the floor at redline. I will say it felt like the limp-ness started JUST over 5k, not right at 5k like before, but probably negligible. I was probably just paying less attention before.

So this issue scales back depending on pedal travel. Weird.

Ok, I just had a weird reminder of my time with this clutch system last summer.

On hot days, when everything was warm and toasty, engaging the clutch took a few pumps to slot first from a stop.

I'm very suspicious of air now, as any air expansion in the lines due to heat would make engagement harder since the air would impede brake fluid flow.

Am I thinking right on this?

To clarify what was happening at a stop light, I would have to pump my clutch pedal a few times and I could feel that the catch point was basically at the floor. I would have to almost muscle the stick into gear while pumping the pedal and holding it at the floor pretty hard.

Don't ask why it took me this long to remember this. I thought all my clutch issues stemmed from the bad TOB. I suppose that's not the best way to think.

That's air. 100% It's not about temperature. It's just that air is compressible.

You're learning. Experience is valuable. Share it.

Well, when the car wasn't warmed up on those days, the clutch acted like normal. Once the oil and everything was just above operating temps (turbos in this engine bay are CRAZY with heat, just updated my build thread to detail some of that) THAT'S when the clutch would get unruly.

Hotter air just expands more and more, so as it takes up more space, you'd have to compress it more and more to get the same result as if it were cooler. So I think temperature definitely played a part in that, at least, that's what my basic understanding of gas physics tells me. I might be wrong. I did think my TOB was ok for a time...

Any other thoughts?

Sure, what air is in there expands with temperature but I'm saying there is no amount of air that is acceptable.

Cool. Thanks a million.

Will update tomorrow when I've had the chance to bleed the system.

Crossing my fingers, almost until they break, hoping it will solve the new-ish issue.

Reminds me of back-in-the-day, one hot July day, down in Yuma, Arizona.

My fellow researcher and I (both mechanical experts...) were out in a cotton field preparing to spray an experimental pesticide, when all of a sudden my experimental high pressure spray rig, that I had built, wouldn't maintain pressure. As the temperature was over 105 degrees F, I was getting rather pissed.

All my checks couldn't find what was wrong. About that time, this ol boy pulls up in a beat up pickup truck and tells us we had better get to spraying because he was about to run a lilliston (rolling cultivator) over the area and wasn't going to stop for us.

I had just fired up my rig, which still didn't work, when the ol boy spat out some tobacco and said "it's sucken air" and pointed to a hose under the rig ....... and walked away.

Sure enough, down underneath, a hose had a slit in it and it was "sucken air".

Ya get the moral of that story ??.....

I kinda figured. It's just more fun to picture him as bubbles from Trailer Park Boys.

Either way, I love his stories.

Bad news guys and gals.

Bleeding the system didn't work.

Let me make sure my process was correct here.
1) clutch pedal hard to floor
2) crack bleed valve
3) close valve after fluid stops
4) release pedal
5) make sure ya got fluid in ya masta cylinda, ya dingus

Right?

I did wait a few seconds after the fluid stopped flowing before closing the valve, but I wouldn't think that would affect it unless the helper was relieving tension on the pedal and "sucken" air.

I will bleed it some more tomorrow to see if that helps, but otherwise, I bled it 8 or so times.

I couldn't really tell if there was air it the lines or not. I had to remove the hose from the nipple since 1/4" fuel line isn't snug on the nipple and started to leak out between it and the hose onto the transmission. Is there a fitting I can use to stick it onto the nipple more tightly?

I just let it squirt brake fluid into a microfiber towel like any growing boy is used to.

Any pointers?
