The ND is definitely a major improvement over the previous Miatas. But, is still carries some of the annoying vestiges of previous Miatas.

It rolls a ton for a sports car, so suspension work is high on the list if you're doing anything more than street driving.

The engine felt pretty unrefined from my experience with the ND1(similar to a lot of the early SkyActive engines). It shakes a fair bit at idle compared to an FA20(also not the smoothest engine ever). No torque dip, though.

And it's obviously pretty noisy on the freeway because of the rag top and not a lot of top insulation.
They are a little tight inside compared to an FR-S.

If all that is acceptable for you, they're otherwise great cars. When modified they can be fairly deadly from the ones I've seen at AutoX the last couple years.

Get a NC3 Miata club with power hardtop retractable roof (real convertible roof), it has more passenger space and trunk space than the newer ND.

The NC is a fat pig compared to the ND.

The ND has more power and weights less than the NC.

If I didn't need the extra space and ability to "jam" kids in the back I would have a ND, a red one, like this >

All kidding aside, I always felt the NC was the closest to being a GT car in the bunch. More space, more creature comforts, more torque.

I'm in a similar situation (and even revived an old thread of mine in the off-topic section) except mine's a lease and I don't know what to do at the end. I would probably be all-in on a Miata if I could fit in one, but I don't. I tried. My knees didn't just hit the steering wheel, I could only get my right knee tucked in before running out of room. Couple that with my eyes being level with the top of the windshield and yeah, it doesn't work. If you fit, do it.

(As an interesting aside, I was able to fit in, and test drive a 124. I liked it, but the shift points were different than in the 86. Both autos, manual mode on both)

True, but depending on the NC model like my NC1, weighs 2457 with little over half tank of gas +2.5 swap (full interior, soft top, amp+ 6" sub, and coilovers). It could be accomplished for pretty cheap vs buying a ND1 . The base NC were not that much heavier than the later NB2.... they do look fatter however.

I bought a 2019 MX-5 Sport automatic in Soul Red. Not an easy combination to find without ordering from the factory; I had to go to Pennsylvania, and the next closest one was in Massachusetts. Maybe down the road I'll get a future generation of the 86, but this feels like an appropriate successor for now.

I don't live near a track, but have access to lots of awesome country twisty roads. I find the body roll is kind of fun, certainly adds to the Miata's character for street driving. I just struggle to fit in one, which is where my saga leads me to the 86.

Weird. I wonder how the stock ND with just RE71R who tore up the autox events I go to beat just about everyone every event if the suspension is no good for anything but street driving.

It's easy for people to make blanket statements about the ND's body roll until they see it wipe the floor with all other stock Twins (and some modified ones as well).
Body roll is not the end of the world as long as it works with you and enhances your experience which is what the goal was with the Miatas. And the way the ND grips and puts the power down is better than my BRZ IMO.

Cole by any chance are you referring to the PITL AutoX series?
It was my buddy in a stock ND2 on RE71R's that won the class championship among other stock MX'5s and Twins.

NDs are beasts on RE71s alone. But once you remove that body roll and go into STR (or A mod for PITL) and it's even more beastly on another level.

I am referring to the same guy
