We are slavish with our dealer people - lots of cookies, donuts, etc. Pays off when things go sideways.

Did they say what happened?

Mine went out at 97K miles, and it was a rapid onset of symptoms. I grew up with British sports cars and already had the sound of a bad release bearing burned into my brain, so I recognized it immediately and got it to a shop before it could come apart.

The only thing that surprised me was how fast it happened. With Triumphs and MGs you hear it coming on more gradually. I'm guessing Tcoat let his go too long because he was expecting the same kind of lead time you got with older cars. I acted quickly in part because I had read about his experience and knew these cars don't give you much time to act.

Based on what mine did, I wouldn't worry about not hearing it or the service guys not detecting it. There was probably nothing to hear on yours during the earlier service visits.

I’d forgotten how lightweight the feel is on a properly operating clutch.

Had to get re-accustomed to it.

Curious why nobody asked about how much is the total bill and how much is covered by Subaru? Mine is at 47k too. I have got a late 2013 BRZ made in July 2013. Is my TOB subject to the same issue? If the bill is too big, maybe I should just switch cars.

None is covered by Subaru you are outside of the warranty period.
Yes you could have the same issue. Or you may not. Seems to be a mixed bag of bushings they used and some lucky guys got the good ones. The majority seem to have avoided the issue but some of us did not.
It cost between $500 to $1200 depending on if the TOB damaged the clutch. If just the bearing you can DIY for under $100 in parts.
The TOB can go on any car and if you start switching every time a wear part wears it will get costly fast.

I definitely cannot drop a transmission to replace the TOB myself. How much will it cost to get it done at a dealer and at a competent indy shop? What is the telltale sign for the TOB failure? I should really start to watch out for it.

The price I stated was the normal dealer costs. A shop can probably do it cheaper and it is not complex so any half decent tech can do it. CAll around your area.

If it starts to go you will have no doubt. It will start as a squeal when your foot is off the pedal that goes away when the car warms up. From there it will get louder and louder and more constant until it sounds like all the demons of hell are under your car floor. If you wait too long it will melt down and take the whole clutch and flywheel with it. This takes months though so as long as you deal with it right when it starts all is good. Don't confuse a squeak when pushing the pedal down with he squeal. The squeak just means you need some lube on the clutch linkage. the squeal is the TOB.

The bill for mine, which included TOB, clutch, flywheel and oil Change was about $1950 less my senior citizen discount.

Interesting addendum to the story. Yesterday I received a box from SOA contains gifts of appreciation! LED roadside “flares” and an appliance to cut seatbelt and break window to escape a water event.

Funny, I’d been thinking about getting an escape appliance recently. I have some old fashion flares that one lights. Now I can be digital too

Hit up Neal @ the racers line in Concord. He drops 86 transmissions as easily as we tie our shoes.

Cool. I shall contact him for sure when it is time. I can do most jobs myself, including timing belt etc. Opening up a transmission is just too hard w/o a lift. I will have to give this to a shop.
