No problem." and he grabs a filler rod and goes to work. After several minutes of much swearing, wire brushing and multiple attempts to get a decent weld he hands it back and says, "This stuff just won't weld for shit. This is the best I can do." The guy from UF takes it back to the trailer and puts it back on the car, it still leaks. So he brings it over to our trailer to show it to a buddy of his on our team who happens to be a bad ass Al welder. So as he's telling us the story and bitching about the Lincoln Electric guy he passes the thingamajig around, and trust me when I say that this was the ugliest, nastiest weld I've ever seen. It was the sort of thing you'd expect from a blind monkey out of his mind on meth. So The UF guy and our guy take it back to the Lincoln tent to find out WTF is going on. ~10 minutes later they come back and it's fixed up as good as new.

The guy had been using a stainless steel filler rod.

Lol, when I started TIG, my instructor made sure as hell that I knew what rods were what materials. Although, Al ones are usually shiny as hell, while SS ones are not so much, so idk how that guy messed up lol.

Darn, I never got around to learning to weld. I attempted to make my own arc welder with a microwave oven I got for free, but not enough amps :/ It would hold a weak arc maybe if I got within 0.5mm. Needless to say, the rod would touch the plate and short out.

That sounds really dangerous lol.

I suggest taking a class if you can find one available to you. I was lucky and did it through my high school. I got a years worth of training under Marty Rice's instruction and I learned a lot!!!

I figure someone at FSAE club might be able to teach me, if I go more often... just too busy to be spending entire weekends working there!

Hey hey my homemade fail welder was not dangerous. When it shorted I would just yank the rod away. Never had a cooling problem either.

I remember doing some welding before when my foreman wanted to teach me. I forget exactly what equipment I was using, since there are better ways to weld now. But holy crap do I remember how I would fuck up on some of the easiest things.

I think I saw some guy's website about this. He took apart more than one microwave. I flipped through it, and then perused Miller's site for pricing. Figured he must be a mountain climber, or something...
