Couldn't we say some of the same things about the 86, though? You could swap "86" for "Supra" and "Subaru" for "BMW" in the bullet points that aren't about 2+2 matters and be hearing some of the same things people have grumbled about ever since the 86/GT-86/FT-86/FR-S was released. There are purists/AE86 torch holders who get driven up a wall over the fact that there isn't a Toyota inline-4 in the car that carries the 86 name.

Didn't bother me any, but I have a friend who is exactly that way, and likely will be even more so when it comes to the new Supra.

New Supra 4 cyl to replace the 86?

Rumor has it that Toyota is doing a few mods to the BMW B58 motor with ex-Yamaha guys. Could be an 86/BRZ situation where the motor is primarily provided by the “rival” company but Toyota makes a few mods (like the direct injection D4S system in FA20).

Very true.
The only sort of difference is that the 86 was said to be "inspired by" the Levin and Trueno (AE86 was a chassis code not a car model) while the new Supra is supposedly the actual "successor" to the name.

I hear ya.....but there was no way they were gonna call this thing a Corolla, lol. I'd love it if they did, but we're never going to see a RWD Corolla again.

LOL No. No they weren't.
The same way that they are not calling the new Supra a Celica even though that was where it all started.

“Looking at the current automotive industry, the talk is all about autonomous driving, electrification and artificial intelligence. What that’s doing is giving rise to a lot of strict regulations, and that limits our capacity to make emotional sports cars; it’s getting much more difficult to do that. So for the fifth point, I think the new Supra will be the last present from Toyota to those who enjoy hearing the pleasing sound of a pure petrol engine at high revs.
Depressing as hell if true. Could mean that the 2nd Gen GT86 will be the last real driver's car.

Or the second gen 86 will be the first hybrid version and this gen is already the last.

I was about to write an angry response, and then I read the context.

Can you put some quotation marks into that?

Where's that thread discussing how the 86 will become a future collectible?

Nah. The market will be flooded by all the guys trading their cars to buy $40K 4 cylinder Supras! The 86s will all just rot away forgotten on dealer lots for the next 30 years.

That's a simple statement, for a more complicated situation between Toyota and Subaru
