I haven't tried yet; I dont think it will work because its the outter shell of the 3rd break light housing and the inner rear windshield that causes the tapping; I am going to try to use a black felt pad and cut it to the shape of the 3rd break housing to see if that will work @Lytheum @DNAPoPo

Folks, be aware that your highmounted stoplight may have three lugs holding the seam across the edge nearest the front of the car. These are in addition to two clips inside. If the plastic is cold and hard, you may need to separate at the seam with a screwdriver.

Could one access the plastic welds from inside the trunk, grind them off, unconnect the wiring and remove the whole brake light assy without removing the rear panels? The through of climbing into the rear seat of this car is quite painful...

Nope. You have to get to the under-side of the parcel shelf. Don't worry, after doing this 3-5 times, you'll start to think of the back seat as "cosy".

Not going to work Even after removing the shelf, grinding through those plastic welds is a bitch.

I would add that it is a lot easier to just remove the trim next to the rear seats - had a heck of a time getting things back together until I finally pulled those out. Otherwise, thanks a ton for this info!

So can someone please confirm this...can you remove the rear deck alone without removing all those other pieces?

And I just found this in another thread dealing with a rattle issue:

is just removing the top half of the brake light good enough for a tint shop to get in there? i have taken my car twice already and both times they just made a cutout for the third brake light.
Im taking the car a 3rd time today and would like them to not do the cutout.
