Best Tire for Aggressive Street Use

If you want a nice, black looking, tire, I'd recommend most of them.

The stickiest street tires will have a mind blowing amount of grip compared to the two you mentioned; they're not even considered to be in the same category.

What is the most important to you?

Tire life (How many miles do you want to get out of the tire, assuming a street alignment)
Cost
Grip
Noise/NVH
Comfort/Feedback (inversely related)

Get RE-11. They're going to be going on closeout soon when the RE-11A comes out. They last a LONGASS time, and will be cheap when the clearance deals are going on.

Also, Bridgestone usually does a $100 rebate on a set once a year too.

18's are fine. Just keep in mind that your tire cost will be higher, and your MPG is gonna drop.

Remember, tires are the ONLY part of the car that touches the ground. In my opinion, it's a safety item.

The new BFG Rival tires showed to wear better than the RS3 and are the new "IT" street tire right now. Most of the guys who got to test them were amazed how little they wore. They were also marginally faster than the RS3 in a track test while being easier to control at the limit.

We are talking about the best aggressive tire *for street use*. In that context, for raw dry grip I'd say AD08 > RS3 = PSS based on this test:

And in the wet, PSS >> AD08 > RS3.

For street usage, I don't see how anyone could say that RS3s are >>>>>>> PSS. Even accounting for hyperbole, that's absurd.

I've run RS3's on the S2000 at the track and on the street, and they're great tires once warmed up.

Currently running PSS on the RX-7 on the street, and on the street, they are effectively the equal of RS3s in warm/dry conditions, and infinitely superior when temps are below, say, 65F and/or if there's any moisture whatsoever.

IMO, "Extreme Performance" tires are overprescribed for street usage.

On the other hand, if I had the budget, I'd be running r-comps permanently on the street.

What's the point, when 99% of the time they're not going to be up to temp? If I had unlimited fundage, I'd still be running PSS on the street.

Keep in mind, I have a lot more experience with tires than most of the guys commenting on this thread.

Do you have track experience on the PSS? That's the only place I figure that it might compare *that* poorly vs. the RS3. I hadn't intended to track the PSSs, but I might run them just to see what happens. I did try a set of StarSpecs on the RX7, and frankly I was very disappointed (after reasonable success using them on the 1/2 as powerful S2000). Plan to run Hoosiers for track duty, but curious how the PSS does...

I literally do have back-to-back comparison experience.

You should record/report objective and subjective results!

I have some experience with the RS3, Star Spec (albeit version 1) , and the PSS. As far as performance goes on the street, track, or autocross, the RS3 and SS are better than the PSS in pretty much every way in the dry despite what that Car and Driver article says. More grip, better turn-in, better feel. In national level autocross, which is very similar to driving on the street... no one uses PSS, the two tires to use are the RS3 and Star Spec.

The PSS rides better and the performance in the wet is much better than the RS3 and still better than the Star Spec. The new BFG Rival, just looking at the tread design and depth, is probably even worse than those two in the wet. The PSS is also going to last longer than those other Extreme performance tires.

When everyone is talking about wet performance on the street for RS3's, Star Specs and maybe the Rival - is it just a matter of slowing down and driving appropriately for the conditions (say downpours) or are they squirrely with any significant amount of water on the road (light rain).

Wet performance to me is grip level on a completely soaked surface, but without puddles or standing water. Standing water performance is a completely different thing, and I wouldn't recommend ANY of these tires if you have that type of condition around.

While magazine tests are one thing, I prefer to go based off of my own experience. Do you REALLY believe that the BMW 3 series deserves to be on the 10 best for 22 years straight?
