I'm staying out of the "roll cage street safety" debate, but consider this: a bolt-in cage does next-to-nothing for rigidity and adds weight. If the class you track the car in does not require a cage, you're effectively making your car slower and harder to get in and out of.

Yeah, the shells are generally the same though. It's not worth the money for people to develop multiple shells materials, so most M helmets would pass the impact test too. At least that's what I recall from articles in.. GRM maybe? don't remember. Either way, the fire resistance is the most important item IMO for an in-car helmet.

I have my helmets inspected after any reasonable impact anyways

I'm not sure I'd say it does next to nothing. Less than a weld in, probably, but it still sandwiches the body between two plates. I noticed (may have been my mind, it's not like I had the car tested) that my car felt less flexible and had less shake/twist after my bolt in cage that I had many years ago.

I haven't had anything that wasn't custom and welded for many years now though.

I'm sure. I just brought it up to point out that head impacts against roll bars are common enough that it's part of the SA standard.

Which is why you don't want a roll bar/cage on the street... your head ain't gonna like that impact.

To clarify the comments here, I think people are recommending to not have a FULL cage on the street. That is, unless you wear a helmet every time you drive it. If the car will be street AND track driven, then you are wise to do a back-half cage. Even if it's a bolt-in, it will improve the safety of the car, plus you can then run 6-point harnesses and race seats. This is all a great safety upgrade. Keep in mind, though, that this must all be done as a package! Don't put harnesses on your stock seats, or harnesses and seats with no roll bar (back-half cage). It all needs to go together.

Glad to see so many here that understand it should be an all or nothing configuration. I fight with this every year for ITR Expo.
