i get a very similar noise on cold startup about 1 in 3 times. Its either this of there is a piece of slag down in my exhaust somewhere that vibrates on startup on its way into high rev. Anyone else hear something similar on cold start?

Wanted to provide an update to this thread. I rigged up 4 mics under the hood with 24 Bit recording, even if you are bad speakers you can visually and audibly hear the valvetrain noise I am speaking about associated with the cam angle change. I also included the log view of these events. It sounds exactly like mine. I took another video today. This time it has 3rd gear a few times as well as fourth and fifth on e85 which makes the change more audible. In addition to that, the dealership just changed the HPFP (No More Crickets!) and supposedly something with the cam. I haven't had a chance to verify the cam claim yet by reading through the paperwork though. With this video, I can now easily hear the change on my phone and ultrabook. I don't need to hook it up the to sound system or Grados to actually hear the changeover.

Just thought I would mention that the ticking sound is getting louder right around when your car is switching to what looks like 100% DI injection. Can you post the logs to download ? viewing screenshots like that is not efficient.

There are quite a few posts of broken cams on here so this car is just a commuter now. Its still fun around the twisty's at 3k rpm. Don't have the time or energy to fight it. With romraider/ecuflash coming I think the famous anti-EcuTek east coat Subaru gurus will sort tuning these cars and get these engine running right. Stock it just doesn't.
