Dadhawk's FR-S (6AT Firestorm)

My log covers things discovered as the unofficial Daily Driver of the group.
I don't have any plans to track it, other than perhaps 1 or 2 track day events, just for the experience. I might be convinced to try an autocross event at some point, but right now no specific plans to do so.

Purchase date: 5/11/2012
Firestorm 6AT
#3 of 86 in the 1st86 Program, and first delivered in Georgia.

Ongoing Fuel Economy Record:

"Commuting Miles" represents two different scenarios below.
May 2012 - May 2013, is defined as 40 miles one way in Atlanta traffic. For those familar with Atlanta, that means about 15 miles of it is "city driving" with speeds at and under 45, and stop and go traffic from West Cobb to I-75. Then it's I-75S to I-285E to Lawerenceville Hwy. The speed varies from 70MPH to stop and go depending on the day, and can include significant "idling time".

May 2013 forward is defined as 40 miles from West Cobb to Carrollton, GA, mostly rural driving along Hwy 61, at speeds that pretty consistently averages 53MPH (40 miles/45 minutes) both ways.

Both include "city driving" doing normal day-to-day stuff around my home, all between 35 and 55MPH with lots of stop lights, etc.
Lifetime: 121,686 Miles Driven at 33.12 MPG
Savings over previous Daily Driver (2000 Chevy Astro): $7,958.18 and 2,333.18 Gallons of Fuel
OEM (Primacy) Tire Average: 32.64MPG over 62,918.7 miles
Bridgestone Ecopia EP422 Plus Average: 33.42 MPG over 59,104.8 miles.

First Impressions

This was a bad weekend for me in terms of getting any seat time. Picked up car Friday evening, then had son's engagement party on Saturday and of course Mother's Day on Sunday. Pretty much any seat time was just normal commute stuff.

Here are some things I've noticed so far:

The AT is as good as I remembered it being in Long Beach, no regrets in getting it. In manual mode, the changes are quick and as fast or faster than if I did it myself. I like the gear up/down indicators next to the numbers that show its safe to go up or down. Keeping the revs under 4K makes the whole experience less thrilling than it could be. Still, no regrets.

Everywhere I go I'm getting thumbs up from random folks. Having the first one in Georgia I get lot of parking lot questions. In nearly every conversation I'm asked about price. I have not met anyone yet that was familar with the car in advance. Nearly everyone thought the car costs 5K to 15K more than it does.

The car is comfortable and like some have said, it feels like you are wearing it, not riding in it. It's taken a few miles for me to get "comfortable" but that's normal for me in just about any new car. It also hasn't helped that it's been raining pretty much all weekend.

More to come with photos.

Nothing extreme right now.
Would consider a supercharger after warranty.
you could consider a TRD supercharger during warranty

tell me how you liked the AT, personally i loved it

Tires

The one negative thing for me are the tires. They are going to have to go. I actually think they border on being unsafe on anything other than a dry pavement.

As noted above, it's been raining here. Even with nothing turned off, I have already slid the back-end on 3 separate occasions in the 80 miles I've driven it. it happened in corners where there is a layer of water. All it took was a little bit of throttle while in the turn and the back end started to slide out.

Note that none of these events were attempts to do so. The first time I was completely unprepared for it. The car is predictable and pulls right back in, but frankly I'd be concerned about letting someone else drive the car in weather or when there is water on the ground.

I'd be interested in any others that have seen this.

NOTE: Since this seems to be a common assumption, let me assure you I've got plenty of experience with RWD, I'd say about 25 years and 1M+ miles in all types of vehicles with way more power and none of which had TC until the FR-S. The bottom line is the tires really have very little lateral grip. Great for drifting, not so great for commuting.

Update: In each case, I was making an intersection turn from a near dead stop, either left or right, and giving it enough throttle to get the car moving, not driving enthusiastically. Since those events though, I haven't been able to reproduce it.

I'm chalking it up to new tires and new driver at this point. One of the first things they teach you in flight school is being able to admit possible pilot error!

Good point, and I actually will once we see pricing and such. Might make a good Christmas present for myself!

hmm interesting, you must have a lot of roads that are grooved or asphalt, stock tires are going to be dedicated drift tires once the car is broken in

currently looking for a set of 17 inch steelies to mount them on 60 bucks for a set of spares at the junk yard lol she wont be pretty but itll do, plus if i pop a tire i dont want a nice set of rims all messed up, plus they make great winter rims for snow tires

dont mean to blow up your thread

Stock Radio

No regrets on keeping the stock radio At least to me, doesn't look nearly as bad in person as it does in pictures. Also, it is hellafunctional!

It syncs right up with my Droid X allowing me to take calls, etc with no issues. The in-car hands-free is very good, helped by the fact that the car is relatively quiet even up at highway speeds. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to use the directory on your phone, which would be useful. Haven't read the manual yet though so there may be more there.

Haven't tried streaming music from my phone, but really probably won't because I have an old 2nd Gen iPod classic I will use for in-car music as a permanent attachment, why? Read on.

The USB connectivity to an iPod is great. The "bug ugly knobs" of the radio function well as iPod controls and after only a few miles I can already control the radio without looking, a must for me. You would never be able to do that with a touchscreen.

The quality of the sound is great, and the volume available easily exceeds what I consider comfortable in such as small cabin. I've been cruising at 60MPH and the radio is only on about 25. Everyone that has sat in the car thanks it sounds great and they like all the integration.

One thing I would have liked is a USB port in the glove box. Then I could just attach and leave the iPod. I may have to determine if its possible to get that added. I would only remove it for syncing purposes anyway as I don't use it anywhere else since we use Amazon Cloud Player for our music collection and as "off-site storage".

Roads around me are nearly all asphalt. Haven't driven on any grooved pavement yet, that will come next week during normal commute.

ohh and be careful, id ont know if this is your first rwd car or not
when a rwd has a limited slip differential it will break loose the back end easier especially when its wet, also how well did the vehicle stability control and traction control work when it was wet? did it make you feel safer?

I appreciate the advice. Only fwd car I've ever owned as a DD (in almost 35 years) was a '77 Honda Civic. Honestly, I think I just wasn't expecting it to be that loose without TC being turned off. I know better now, and none of it was "Jesus take the wheel" kinda stuff. My concern is more if I let someone else drive it.

Yea, if I haven't gotten used to RWD after 35 years, not sure I ever will.

Congrats on your new FR-S
Thanks for your first impression driving. Interesting points made.
I preordered the 6AT with the stock stereo. It is good hear that you like the performance of the 6AT. Sounds like you are impressed with the stock stereo and it functions. I don't want the touch screen either. The touch screens don't like my touch always a hassle to use. I want buttons and knobs.
Those squeely tires they chose for the car never been impressed me, but I assumed they there would no issues in the rain.
