Wouldn't interfere? What does that even mean? They're still going to void the factory warranty if you mess with it too much.

Quote:
Speaking at the Geneva show, Supra Chief Engineer Tetsuya Tada said a front-mounted six-cylinder turbocharged engine powering the rear wheels was the configuration favoured by owners and aficionados of previous versions of the Supra. His comments tally with information recently leaked that the car would offer up 330bhp from an in-line six.
If you had to survey a study group to learn that information, then Toyota may be more hopeless than I thought.

I believe that comment may have been specifically related to BMWs locked down DME/ECU. I've heard some things saying that there were internal discussions to make a more open engine management system so tuning was easier off the bat.

Full access to the B58 ECU happened just last week by some Russian developers. That's a long time after the cars release. Toyota/Lexus ECUs have been locked down for a while as well. We got lucky with the 86 because Subaru is more or less making open ECUs.

And yet they still forget to ask about the 6 speed manual.

No manual transmission available. Did Tada-san say the above with a straight face???

I thought our ECU is Toyota since the Subaru dealers use the Techstream laptop with our cars.

Toyota wanted the 86 to be tuner friendly to begin with at least inside Japan. Not so sure about this new Supra.

Using an 8 speed automatic as if this car is meant to be a lead-in for future Lexus ownership.

You're reading too far into this. The ZF 8HP and the 6HP before it are the only rwd transmissions BMW has been using for a long time.

Technically they're available on the 3 series and the 2 series, but not on the 6 cylinders since the F30 facelift.

Point is, the ZF 8HP is one of the only options for a RWD auto transmission these days, It's very common. even Dodge uses it.

While it does interface with techstream for body control configuration, the ECU encryption is pretty standard faire Subaru. Hence why Tactrix/OpenECU supported it so quickly.

New Supra has tuning in mind as well, the motor and chassis have a surprising amount of provisioning for tuners and tinkerers.

Nothing comes cheap when it comes to cars. But I’m suspecting the 4 cylinder A90 would come in at well under $50k and 6’s inside of $60k mark...

I guess the million dollar question is who would Toyota collaborate with to bring back the MR2, maybe with Lotus again or dare I say Porsche.
Cayman’s seating position was the target for ZN6.

Cayman’s handling and capability was a target to beat for the A90 Supra.

There’s a difference here.

I asked that question.

Tada san said, “we haven’t given up on the 86, and for people who want to row gears and kick clutches and fly sideways, there is this option. We want you to be enjoying the ZN6 with all the flamboyant driving”

So I’m assuming that it’s priority matters currently.
The A90 and the focus was to first research and make it the best performing package on a European cuicuit, and hone the car to sharpness and precision. We must concentrate on that first, and foremost. Advanced differentials and dynamics all coupled to focus on this. Perhaps we can see later, provisions are there for a manual, integrated in the design, but it simply wasn’t the focus at this time to develop something archaic.
I get it. With electronics integration of things to assist stability, and a fast, crisp 8 speed paddle shift, a levered 6 speed and 3rd pedal wouldn’t have a chance at matching the speeds on a complex and fast raceway today...

But if Tada san says there’s “provisions” it means there’s a way.
And it also means maybe if the first few years of this car’s sales may justify it later in the process like what happened with the Gallardo. A special one later for those who don’t mind being slower, but prefers classic nostalgia. Maybe? But I wouldn’t hold my breath, the LFA never came with a kick-pedal and sideways lever either...
