Thank you for that. I suppose it makes sense it's the same as the EJ motors.

Could this also be an explanation for my car having a tough time starting occasionally? It won't happen at a cold start but if drive a short distance (less than 5 miles) and then go to crank the car up again, it takes at least two tries. I had it happen a couple weeks ago in a situation where I had the car running for nearly an hour and it still did this to me when starting back.

In all situations this has happened, I had the car off for under 15 minutes.

In my case, I did not have any issue to start the engine. I also did not feel any power loss. Popping sound happened not only cold start, but also high load @ low rpm (2500-3500 rpm).

What gas are you running?

That sounds a bit worrisome. Maybe we have different issues? I'm using 93 octane (AKI?). American manual calls for 93 and 91 as a "backup".

No. This was all info passed down word of mouth. The Dealer Techs will not know anything about this. They need to call their Technical Assistance Hotline

@Laika Did you take your car in yet? Mine does the same thing you described. 1 or 2 pops (with rpm drop) on cold start only. After the first 1 or 2 pops, it doesn't happen again.

Subscribed. Mine started doing this about 3 weeks ago and I wondered what it was. The previous video posted is exactly what mine sounds like. It usually does it 2 or occasionally 3 times on startup. Watching to see what the dealer says about it.

Looks like I am taking mine in this week. Went to go get dinner tonight and the car did the popping backfire noise. Hoping they will take a look at it.

The dealer called me back today. They were unable to reproduce the popping so far. They are going to retry in the morning with a cold start.

Did you ever have this addressed at the dealership? I have the exact same thing on cold start-up; a big miss that doesn't throw a code. Is this in any way related to the fuel injection seals?

No, Toyota didn't give the dealership the go-ahead to do anything. They've seen the video, too. I guess I need more video evidence + bitching..

Did your car ever exhibit the clunk/popping on startup?

My car does this also on cold starts. Never been tracked, just got through a gentle breakin period.

It was typically under medium-ish acceleration, once the engine was fully warmed, and at lower RPMs (under 3k)

I haven't heard any backfires during driving. It only happens about the first 20sec of a cold idle.

Was it the same noise though?
