Subaru is now reportedly considering to evolve STI into a performance subdivision on par with Nissan's Nismo.
I thought that's what STI was? Who do they think made cars like the 22b, wrx sti type r, type ra, and spec c?

STi is only used on the Impreza WRX(now just the WRX) chassis in a formal manner. NISMO on the other hand has been used on the Skyline(now GT-R), Silvia(240SX), 350z, 370z and probably others. Another example of a division like NISMO is the SRT division of Chrysler. STi is is like the Shelby of Ford.

Right. But STi is still only a department within Subaru.Unlike the M brand for BMW, Nismo for Nissan, AMG for Mercedes Benz.

STi will be it's own subsidiary company, able to run their own.

I think this is years away, maybe even a decade. Subaru is small compared to the big companies who have their own in-house tuning companies.

Honda is even struggling at this with their Mugen division. And did you know Hyundai is trying this tactict too with their "N" brand?

But yes, an STi brand would be super sweet! They already have the pedigree and reputation.

I thought STi was their own subsidiary company under Fuji Heavy Industries?

And Mugen isn't owned or operated by Honda... Honda's performance branch is HFP or whatever

Fuji Heavy Industries own Subaru.... Toyota is the Majority stock holder of Fuji Heavy Industries...... Who owns who?

if STI were its own entity, like SRT, then they would be free to create, produce, and market their own vehicles.

Much like SRT will not be just a rebadged Fiat with different sheet metal.

Subaru Tecnica International Company Limited (says on its Japanese name) is a division of Fuji Heavy Industries since 1988. Just because STI doesn't mass produce, market and distribute their complete cars outside of Japan doesn't mean they are much different than M Gmbh under BMW, Quattro Gmbh under Audi, R Gmbh under VW, AMG Gmbh under Mercedes-Benz, etc. Using the tuning division to market the company's high performance variants is nothing new, just that in recent years marketing has somehow made these tuning divisions into seemingly sub-brands which appear to be more tightly integrated with their parent branding.

Subaru in Japan already has a performance oriented trim called STI Performance package, similar to Audi's S-Line package, VW's R-Line package, BMW's M package, Merc's AMG package. I really hate to keep explaining that "STI" in "Impreza WRX STI" is just a trim. STI itself does make complete cars (tS models, Sxxx models, 22B, etc).

I can't believe this is even harder for the west to understand than Seiko / Grand Seiko in the watch world. So many BS articles by clueless writers on the web about what STI is or stands for. To end the confusion I think Subaru should just get rid of the STI trim for the WRX, and call it something else.

So would the STI no longer be a WRX which, as we all know, is no longer an Impreza?

There is no "The" STI. STI is just an enhanced trim level of the WRX, it's not a model of vehicle.

The STi is much more than just a trim level, and I wouldn't consider it a performance package either, because of the difference in transmission, differential, and different wheels. Not to forget it's a completely different engine option from the new base WRX (a choice I think is for motorsports tuning).

Best Motoring had an interview with FHI where they said the Impreza WRX STI is basically their version of the BMW M3. It's like M3 is the high performance trim of the 3 series.

GT Channel had an interview with the boss of STI and he explicitly said the Impreza WRX STI is made by FHI not STI, STI took that and made their own model called Impreza WRX STI tS (tS stands for tuned by STI).

Confused yet?

Subaru has 8 models, well, 7 since the Tribeca is now gone. Why would they start a separate brand for two models? Doesn't compute.
