I never understood that argument either. That’s exactly what they did to build these cars on the old Impreza chassis in the first place. Swap transaxle for longitudinal tranny, bam, done, RWD.

Because it has actual name recognition on a global scale. They sold millions of Celica's over the years.

I've had a first gen LT, if I had the space, and inclination for a old car, a LT would be on my short list

With a modern drivetrain and suspension it would be wicked fun

Many, many, MANY non car people know the name Celica. About .00001% of the driving public would have even the slightest clue of what an AE86 even was. Especially since the AE86 was just a chassis designation and not the name of the actual model of car. Of course they would recognize the AE86 name of Corolla but that would give them a whole different mental picture of what it was. Hell, I myself had no clue where the 86 name came from until I read the development history. Didn't know the AE86/Corolla Levin/Sprinter Tureno was a cult classic and didn't care (still don't really). If it wasn't for Initial D I doubt that there would be anybody under the age of 50 that had ever heard of the car in North America.

Celica has been around for ages and has tons of name recognition (as much hate as the 7th gen version shown gets, it was still a popular car for a little bit. I think it gets more love now than it did when it first came out, Maybe the 7th gen got more love because the Scion tC wasn't exactly what people wanted as its spiritual successor.)

86 has been around since Initial D popularized it...… (and it was merely a chassic code....the car itself is named Sprinter/Trueno or Corolla GTS in North America).

Not sure if they COULD place the Celica somewhere where it could be revived though.

Small RWD? 86 and Supra has that spot covered.
FWD? FWD compact coupes are pretty much dead, and it would most likely fit better as a 2 door Corolla coupe. And I doubt if they did that they would call it a Celica over a 2 door corolla coupe....
4WD? Is there a market for a rally style 4WD coupe?

To be clear, both then and now, I never said that they would use the global platform just that it was feasible that they could. The same conditions that make it feasible pretty much totally rule out their even considering the use of the Toyota platform. The whole cost save of a GP is that they can pretty much make any car on any line in any plant with a minimum of fuss and costs. To make a car on a different manufactures platform defeats the whole system. If they used the Toyota platform would they move it to a Toyota plant? Is there even a plant that has the capacity and space for a dedicated one model vehicle? The Gunma plant that currently assembles them makes 7 different models on 4 different lines. Are they going to stop building one of their top selling models to build a one off platform?
This is why I feel that these "reports" that the next gen will be built on a Toyota platform are pure garbage.
