Oh, it sucks not seeing it in Tokyo. Seemed a fitting place. And all these spy shots and speculation aren't helping with the hype. But everything at the Toyota show, sans the Century, was about future tech and innovation. We can see why a conventional sports car with presumably a BMW engine and ZF torque converter doesn't fit in there. Also the major markets for the Supra will be the US and Europe. I know some people had argued Geneva or New York for the debut. Guess they were right

Where's The Supra?

Quote:
Supra, Where Are You?

Last night (or this morning, depending on where you live) was the start of the Tokyo Motor Show. The Tokyo show happens once very two years, so Japanese manufacturers don't have many chances to show off to the home market.

This year, all eyes were on Toyota, as it was thought that they'd show a production ready version of the sports car it's developing with BMW. And it's widely expected to bring back the Supra name. Instead, Toyota talked about mobility, and showed a new Century, a van concept, and the hybrid, but FR-S based, GR-HV Concept. And there was no mention of the Supra. You could even hear people on the livestream asking where the Supra was.

It's too bad, but it seems like our next chance to see the Supra will be in Detroit at the Auto Show in January, which is the fourth anniversary of the debut at the FT-1 Concept (pictured above), the car the Supra should look like.

Toyota Will Probably Continue in WEC

Not seeing the Supra was a disappointment, but there was some good news: Toyota is likely to continue running at Le Mans and in the WEC. When Porsche dropped out after Le Mans this year, there was doubt that Toyota would want to continue as the lone manufacturer in LMP1-H. At the Tokyo Motor Show, team boss Shigeki Tomoyama intimated that the team would continue, with a spokesman clarifying that “Toyota is willing to participate in WEC 2018-19, but our commitment will depend on appropriate regulations being confirmed.” We'll have to wait for an official confirmation, but it sounds like it'll happen.

"As for the Supra, Tomoyama confirmed that Toyota wants the vehicle to have a straight-six layout and be “light and powerful.”

Tomoyama said Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda—driving under his racing alter ego “Morizo”—has been active in testing the Supra at the Nürburgring and elsewhere.

“We are focusing on rear tire traction and contact with the road,” Tomoyama said. “Cornering within smaller-diameter (tight) corners will be very important. The rear tires will need a little slip, and drivers need to know (the limit) of the slip.”

As for how much the Supra will be similar to the BMW Z4, Tomoyama said that Toyota utilized “some” parts from BMW, “but the model we are developing will be completely different. We will not disappoint.”

"As a benchmark, Tomoyama has brought his personal 1997 Supra, tuned to 600 hp, into the Toyota executive parking lot. The Supra makes so much noise compared to most executives’ cars that the parking attendant tried to throw him out of the lot, determining that Tomoyama was a youthful imposter. Now, Tomoyama said: “He bows very deeply to me.”
