A more potent Toyota GT-86 is on the way, but electric motor assist could be used instead of turbocharging.

It’s no secret that Toyota is currently working on a high-performance version of its highly acclaimed GT-86/Scion FR-S sports coupe. Only days after the Japanese automaker revealed a nearly production-ready GT-86 convertible concept at the Geneva Motor Show, Autocar is reporting that Toyota is considering a high-performance gasoline-electric hybrid version. In fact, chief engineer Tetsuya Tada says that his team is already working on the car’s mid-life facelift.



They are also "investigating both turbocharging and supercharging too, but an electric motor assistance solution is also possible, and would bring benefits that forced induction does not." Tada emphasized that an electric motor assist solution has the ability to provide substantial low-rpm torque boost for the naturally aspirated 2.0-liter boxer four without sacrificing throttle response or any compromises in regards to fuel economy. But the Prius’s heavy hybrid system is not being considered. Instead, TRD is looking at the Honda CRZ’s hybrid system for inspiration because it’s cheaper and simpler.

This thread and "Hybrid" is not belong here. Just couldn't stand to drive this car w/o hearing the full rev engine sound and loud exhaust. lol

We can hate all we want, but the petrol engine is eventually going the way of, eh, the dinosaur. The experience of driving a car is always evolving, it just so happens we currently have a particular formula that makes for a very enjoyable experience. I for one, am curious how a "sport" hybrid system feels.

Hybrids are useless because they still use petrol. They are not the way of the future, they are gimmicky and just as bad for the environment as a normal car, if not worse.

It'd be sweet. A battery pack spanning the floor (ala Model S) would help lower the center of gravity even more and stiffen up the chassis for even better handling. Add that on top of more HP and instant Torque (easy way to fix that torque dip anyone?)... I think the minimal weight increase would be highly offset. Hey, might even get slightly better gas mileage too if one can dream.

think of it this way, an Electric motor, espicially one like the Honda's IMA system adds power. At least till the battery is out, if you're looking for more power without Force induction, and a way to make it sip gas, in a way a electric motor makes sense. This of it as like the CRZ powertrain, the car is normally about 112hp I think ( gotta look it up again) and the Electric motor adds about 10more hp. It's not much you can get that with a Exhaust and intake, but still the consequence of this is that you use less gas. It's not a bad idea, I'm just not willing to dish out more money for it you know.

well youre in luck because one of the qualities of an electric engine is that they are much more quiet than combustion engines.

do you have any info regarding the battery stuff strengthening the cars chassis in a way that isnt possible without them? seems strange to me.

i think a hybrid system can be implemented properly in a sports car. i dont know if it can be done in a cost effective matter at this level.

I agree for the most part, but it's still the next step in the evolution. Just as bad for the environment is a lateral step i.e. no improvement, but using much less petrol is at least a forward step and I can appreciate that. Do I want to own one right now? No, but I am curious how it feels for spirited driving.
