Probably not. The Cayman has a transaxle since it is an MR layout, so getting one to properly mount to a FR car would be pretty difficult. You'd be much better off starting with an engine designed for a front engine car. Besides, the base Cayman engine would only take you up to 275hp, which is not that much gain considering the effort involved. The S engine (3.4L 325hp) would be much better (though still far too much work to be worth it IMHO).

My GTS 86 cost me 35,400 Australian dollars before onroad costs. That's the top of the line model with all trimmings.
The Porsche Cayman in comparison starts at 107k. So just over a third of it's price. |

From Jalopnik: http://jalopnik.com/5904824/scion-fr+s-first-drive If Scion sold cars like drug dealers sold drugs, they'd be giving away little bits of the FR-S in baggies to everyone they see. They'd have local news channels running panic stories on the "Scion FR-S problem." Keith Richards would be trying to snort one off Anita Pallenberg's naked behind. Yes, it's just that easy to get addicted to it. Because what Scion has done (well, really what Toyota and Subaru have done) is something so straightforward and simple that it's hard to remember why it's now become so rare. That's right, the FR-S is an honest-to-god old school kick-in-the-ass sports car.

Overpriced perhaps but not overrated. Porsche's are great cars and the FR-S is as well. If our 86's had a flat 6 there would be no compelling reason whatsoever to consider a Cayman...EVER. IMO Sent from my StarTrek communicator using Tapatalk

There is always a compelling reason to own a mid engined car over a FR. Always. |

This is the reason why I bought this FR-S as my daily driver and my Cayenne/550i as my weekend car.

That said, I know stock a Cayman S will wreck an 86 on the track or at almost every performance benchmark all day long. Though it'll be more mundane doing it. Yes, there's a reason the FRS is my DD as well. It's not my only car by a mile. |

When my brother had a new boxster it was extremely fun to drive, and I was much more comfortable driving that car much faster. That + convertible made that car extremely enjoyable to drive. Interior, tech, and overall sportiness was better than the FR-S. Driven alone the power in the FR-S is... lacking. Hopping into the Cayman it is extremely obvious. My previous car was an SLK 55 AMG, and while not great at turning, it pulled about as hard as a stock Cayman S (or felt like it).
Of course compared to his 911, Tesla, black series C, and ferrari the boxster wasnt much... |

I have a FRS, 2 years now. But these folks slamming down Porsche have never driven one. They're extremely refined compared to what we drive. I've driven lots Porsches lately test driving and well they are not boring nor are they in any way mundane. I suspect half folks throwing negative comments are simply those that never have driven one or can never own one is all. Bang for buck are cars are great yes but there's lots to experience out there folks.
