Wasn't Nissan called Datsun at one time?

Datsun, as a company name, was used well back into the early 1930s, and the company existed under other names back into the 'teens. Nissan has been the parent company since the late 30s, I believe. Starting in the late 50s, the 'Datsun' name was used for export cars only, and Nissan didn't drop the Datsun name completely until the mid 80's. So, WW2 wasn't an issue at all.

Actually Nissan would be a bad example in this case since Datsun was resurrected in 2012 for use in emerging markets as a low-tier brand.

https://www.datsun.com/

They also have Infiniti in the US which is used to name everything "Q" and produce 1000 concepts that will never see the light of day in production.

Erm, I mean a luxury brand.

Yeah I was pretty sad that they decided to use such a storied name for some of the cheapest-quality cars produced in the world.
