Drop In Filter Dyno Results - FT-86 SpeedFactory

FT-86 SpeedFactory got to spend our Sunday morning with Central Imports here in town and did some initial testing with our Red Rocket...

It was a gorgeous Sunday morning and Central Imports was kind of enough to let us fire up the new 2013 Scion FR-S on their dyno for some baseline runs and drop-in filter testing. After looking over the car with Sean and Brian of Central Imports, we started getting the FR-S strapped down and ready to be put through her paces with these drop in filter choices.

Yes it's a barn. Don't judge us this is IOWA, you eat our corn! They say to never mess with the people that make your food!

Once the car was strapped down and everything was ready to go, we got our baseline runs in. The numbers are right on par with what other shops are finding for whp/wtq. So, we decided to give some factual information on what drop-in filters actually do for cars. We have all been through the debate on whether drop-in filters for factory air boxes are ever worth it. Well, we wanted to put the numbers and facts right in your face on this issue.

We decided to try out three different filters for these tests ( More coming ). The HKS Super Hybrid, aFe Power filter, and the good ol' K&N High Flow filter.

Mad Tight JDM HKS!!!!!!

K&N BRO

aFe Dry Element

From left to right, K&N, Stock, HKS, and aFe

Hey someone was trying to put this in backwards.....n00b (me) lack of coffee.

Like I said, it was a prefect morning for dyno runs!

AND THE RESULTS ARE IN!!

STOCK

HKS

K&N

aFe

There you have it! Gains across the board for all of these drop-in filters. Each filter making about 5 peak hp more than the factory filter and torque not changing at all really. Once we get these runs over layed onto the stock baseline run you will be able to see that the hp gains are throughout the powerband and really show in the higher rpm range. ( Should have that here tomorrow forgot it at the Dyno )

Along with the nice little HP gain, you can definitely hear the engine much more and you get a bit more throttle response. I will see if my mpg's improve, as well, which we could possibly see.

We have the K&N in our Red FR-S and the aFe Dry element in our Silver FR-S for long term studies, ok well medium term until more upgrades are done.

I'd say money well spent for such an easy improvement for your car!

Thanks for reading and look forward to more from FT-86 Speedfactory!

Little disclaimer here, I know the RPM bands don't match up, and I know heat of multiple runs cause different readings by a small margin, and I know people like to have opinions. BUT, we have nothing to gain here but providing simple information on real world results. It's not our manufactured product but an independent test showing what these items can do.

Runs were done in 4th gear with about 5 minutes in between runs for filter change. This was our first time with the car on the dyno and had a couple issues with spark pick up on the read out but will work to correct that in future testing. Please bear with us.

Nothing out at this time. We have them en-route and will have data the second they arrive.

Other tuners saw zero gains without any filter. I dont think 5 is reasonable at all.

I've had the K&N for a couple weeks now too, definitely noticed a minor improvement, especially in throttle response.

Interesting I will be awaiting seeing the overlays. I have an afe dry filter in the car now same one you tested but also have an oiled one which is supposed to flow better than the dry one. I felt like I lost a little throttle response versus the stock filter so I'm going to swap things around again and try of the oiled filter as well.

I think one vendor tried with no filter and saw no gains but then installed a Prova filter and actually saw decent gains.

No problem. We plan to do much more of these tests. Real world un-biased testing.

Any barn with a Dynojet is cool

Can you post those runs overlayed on one graph? Would be interesting to see differences throughout.

Overall, looks like the K&N performed best, with AFE about neck and neck.
