Smile Hi, new here

Hi BRZ/FRS/86 fans.

I am the proud brand new owner of a pearlescent white 2017 Toyota 86. It has 4-cylinder Subaru boxer engine, 200ish hp, 17" chrome wheels, 6-speed manual, HIDs & DRLs, cruise control, purchased at roughly $28K. I picked this car because I like the design and the fact that my previous car was an old beater, so I've never had anything new until now. My career path changed for the better and I could afford something a little more than a used $10K car, but up to $30K.

I'm coming from having no experience with driving stick, but I've gotten better these past few weeks. One thing I have read, and also noticed myself is that the car handles really well, but it's a bit on the slow end for speed and power. I'm starting to feel that. Revving the car up loud, it sounds like its fast, but I'm not going anywhere fast! But that's ok with me, I still love this car.

From a dead stop, too often I have cars coming up on my rear bumper as I'm shifting between 1st, 2nd and then 3rd. By the time I'm in 3rd is only when I get the speed to get distance from the car behind me. This is probably in part of me being a beginner manual driver as well - trying to shift gears quicker and at appropriate revs and preventing stalling. But it somewhat disheartening when a mom in a corolla with kids in the back seat are outgunning me the first few gears from dead stop. I think there is an unspoken rule that if your car looks fast, people expect you to drive fast. Because race car.

So I'm now looking at seeing if there are cheap ways to increase launch power without voiding the warranty. Maybe adding cold air intake, new exhaust (cat-paws exhaust or something that I've heard about?), and dropping a V6 or V8 in replace of the 4-cylinder boxer? I don't really know.

Anyway, I like the car and I think it looks fancy and fits my personality. But mine lacks power on the launch, leaving a little bit to be desired. Once I'm going, it's great. It's just getting it going quickly is my problem so that people aren't on my butt.

Fuck them, they can wait. There's no rule that says you have to accelerate up to the speed limit as quickly as you can.

Drive at your own pace and comfort level, everyone else can eat a dіck.

Keep the car stock for a while and you'll love it more every day. No cat-paws exhaust needed unless you want it to be louder because it won't do anything meaningful for power.

Welcome to the forums!

Hello Lakitu and I'll add my welcome ......

As far as the soccer mom in corolla beating you from a light ..... I wouldn't worry about it ..... her car being first into the intersection will shield you from people running red lights. Besides, what makes the difference ..... there is a good chance you're not both going to the same place anyway .....

As far as the car's power ...... it's got plenty for average driving ...... besides, you don't have any mountains to climb anyway ......

If you mod your car to go faster ...... you may beat out the soccer mom ...... but the dude in the mustang will still beat you ..... so why mess with the car's engine .....??

This first post by a "new" member hits about 85% of the troll statements out there. It is the whole damned "Can't keep up with traffic" shit all over again. Even nails the whole slower than a Corolla theme.

OP, if for real (I have my doubts) then just learn to drive the thing right. There is no reason in the world that you are actually going so slow that people are backing up behind you.

I say like the classified rules new members need to hold up a piece of paper next to their face with the date and forum name. Ha!

I meant cat-back lol. And the V6/V8 thing, maybe I shouldn't have said that because to be honest I really don't know what I'm talking about. Maybe I won't touch the car at all and learn to adapt to what I have. The car is a blast to drive, so I'll get better and quicker at shifting, maybe that's all I need to not have people so close to my rear bumper at launch. Maybe I'm too gentle on the gas at 1st and 2nd. But totally not trolling lol. Just noob. I have only gotten into learning about cars maybe about 8 months ago, even though I've driven cars for over 20 years. Crazy how you can do something and not know anything about it. Super duper late bloomer here.

Thanks for the warm welcome, guys!

Stay tuned for pictures!
