Actually, I'm afraid it might be the steering.
The car is very unpredictable at highway speed, tire wear is uneven (alignment was done 6 months ago), steering used to knock at "parking speed".
The steering shaft is leaking as well.
Well... fuck.

I already had it checked by Toyota approximately 5 months ago and they couldn't find anything.
I've read that some steering rack bolts could comme loose and hit the undertray (making the knocking sound).
But the leaky steering shaft means nothing good.

The rest of it is technique.

There is something funky about this transmission that I've never felt with any other. It feels like the syncro clutches are just a bit too dinky for the task. Six years in, I still double clutch my downshifts and to re-spool when I miss that first cold 1-2 shift.

I just hammer it in and rev-match. It hasn't broken yet..

Just did my own oil change at 70K KMS, K&N air filter and cabin filter just need to rotate the tyres.

Decided to do the services myself after previous mechanic couldn't get the oil level correct by 2L.

It seems like there is also something hit or miss about it too. Some shifts are like butter, while others are not. I agree with others that it generally gets better with warmer trans oil, but even when up to temp it is inconsistent on feel. Don’t really care though, I hear it’s all part of the experience

I remember early on, it was marketed as a car to make you a better driver, that it rewards the driver for using good technique. I am convinced that phrase was first uttered during some argument over the transmission. One of the official articles discusses the delay caused by tweaking something to get the shifting "just right."

I think that they came up with the "better driver" angle because they knew people were going to bitch about it.

They're also not wrong.

Knock on wood* I haven't had any syncro issues at 82k. Fresh Redline MT90 yearly.

99k miles on my trans. Got the car used with 30k miles on the ODO. I've been putting Motul Gear 300 every 30k miles in the car. Seems fine so far. I don't baby the trans either, and it's been through 10 track days
