Brake pad shims
I'm swapping my TRD brake pads for project mu 800 pads and was wondering if I should transfer over the shims that come on the TRD pads and I think there on the stock pads as well and place them on the new project mu pads?

If they are oem shims they are only there for noise reduction. if you don't care about noise don't worry about them. I've always swapped them over.

I didn't swap them over when I put Project Mu HC+800 pads on my car. They squealed like a Banshee when braking at low speeds. The next weekend I put the shims back on.

Squeal is caused by vibration. Shims reduce vibration. Physics 101 applies.

I used a set of Forester brake pad shims but projectmu HC+800 still squeal here and there especially after driving some days at low "town" speeds!

One source of squealing is vibrations, for that shims may help a bit.
Another source of squeeling is not being able to put enough heat during normal daily driving within speedlimits with trackpads and bedded layer wearing off from rotors. For this one may try every X days rebed brakes if one can find some very empty highway stretch (so to not bother other drivers on road), but imho best bet would be having two specialized pad sets for DD & for track, and switch them prior/post trackdays. |
