Connection is AE86 and FT86 are entry level affordable lightweight RWDs. 2000GT has always been a high end sportscar to Toyota and enthusiasts alike. Something legendary, something super like Supra or LFA. 30years from now, you will see LFA in collectors' hand and go on auction for well over a million dollars (2000GT was auctioned at 1.2 Mil in 2013), but FR-S will be at scrapyard or in hand of drift junkies.

S800 is a platform reference.
2000GT is a stylistic reference.
AE86 is a price point / target market reference.

All three archive models may have other minor design references that would overlap to inspire the new model.

Marketing just exploited these references in their campaign efforts but I'm sure some connections were made right from the start.

An analogy would be the adidas NMD referencing their archive catalog in a similar fashion with their design and marketing material (Boston Super ~ AE86, Rising Star ~ S800, Micropacer ~ 2000GT).

Agree. Though what's more important is, how is it related to consumers' perspective? It's always price point of the product. Price point segments consumers and determines demographics.

The classic Jeco digital clock I used to think it's some sort of Toyota inside joke to be around for this long.

Then one time I saw a pic of the clock inside the 2000GT and it reads JECO.

Man, the bar for supercar was really low back then... 150hp with a 2400lb curb weight.

Forget about spec. 2000GT was created by Carroll Shelby and won many racing series. Those achievements earned the car its status, not the spec.

I would describe it more as fishious. The car looks like an angry, fat fish that sits on the bottom of the ocean eating whatever garbage floats down to it while cursing all the quicker, more attractive fish above it.
Apparently the "constipated catfish" look is what all car companies must think buyers want today.

Seriously - look at just about every new car introduced in the last 3 years or so.

I suspect someone may have posted that already, possibly many times. But too many threads to follow.

Anyway, the 86 is not "upcoming" anymore on Toyota website

True this. Still it doesn't look like Toyota is trying to hide that simple fact. They're proud of it.

Rear-Wheel Drive Hachi Roku

A global icon, the AE86 Hachi Roku Corolla helped cement Toyota’s racing cred. With its light body, Rear-Wheel Drive chassis and nimble handling, the AE86 was a force to be reckoned with on the track and the streets. It inspired generations of enthusiasts and the car remains a legend to this day. Toyota took this AE86 DNA and gave it a modern twist to create our purest sports car yet—the 2017 Toyota 86. It’s everything a sports car should be, backed by Toyota’s proven technology. And it’s how we carry the 86 legend forward to the next generation. Let’s fire it up.

I like "constipated catfish". It's the only thing I don't like about it, but it's a better car in every way so far. It's grown up a bit, which may be bad to some.
