Lachute Performance turns a Subaru into a superpowered race car

Jim Leggett

Special to The Gazette

MIRABEL – If you are a fan of fast Subarus, you probably already know the name Lachute Performance, the high-performance tuning shop that specializes in the boxer-engined, symmetrical all-wheel-drive road rockets.

Founded by accomplished racer Julien Pilon 12 years ago, Lachute Performance has built a reputation for race-winning cars in rallying and road courses.

“We wanted to showcase all what we have learned over the years,” Pilon explained. “It was a natural choice to build a special Subaru that combines the performance of a race car yet keeps it useable on the street. The best of both worlds.”

What Pilon and his team have come up with is the LP400, a road car that can be driven at speed on the track, a combination that many tuners have tried with little success.

Engine: Based on Subaru’s already hyper-performing 2012 Impreza STi, Lachute Performance adds nearly 50 per cent more horsepower and many suspension and brake upgrades to keep the car under control. Research and development took two years to complete and more than 50,000 kilometres of testing was logged on tracks like ICAR and Autodrome St-Eustache to ensure reliability.

Taking Subaru’s unique boxer style engine block, the opposed cylinders are filled with Cosworth forged pistons, and yes, that is the same Cosworth of Formula One engine fame. Forged connecting rods attach those pistons to a nitride-treated Subaru EJ crankshaft spinning in full-race, multi-layer bearings.

The engine is still turbocharged but the boost has been raised from 13.3 psi to 17 psi. The fuel charge is passed through an intercooler to keep the temperature down and the power up.

Lachute Performance manufactures their own headers and Up pipe from 304L and 321 stainless steel tubing that help create tremendous torque and better low-end throttle response. The stainless steel exhaust system is available in three stages, each with higher performance levels.

With improved engine electronics and a short ram air intake from K&N, the LP400’s engine generated 114 more horsepower than the stock 2.5-litre motor and 126 more foot-pounds of torque (385 horsepower, 405 foot-pounds of torque). A heavy-duty clutch developed in conjunction with Bully Clutch incorporates a steel plate with Kevlar facing on one side and the stock organic material on the other to handle the increased torque.

Suspension, Brakes & Wheels: There are too many modifications to describe here but extensive information is available on their website (LP400). The highlights are 22mm adjustable swaybars by Whiteline both front and rear to improve handling. A full set of Eibach Pro-Kit springs are installed to lowered the car’s centre of gravity and improve stability.

H-braces have been added between the strut towers at the front and rear and firmer bushings installed on the steering rack and rear sub frame mounting points.

Lots of horsepower requires lots of braking power and the LP400 uses Kangaroo Paw ventilation design rotors for superior heat dissipation. The Alumalite centres are reusable while the XG150 high-carbon-alloyed iron rotors provide the braking surface. Ferodo DS2500 racing brake pads take the brunt of the force up front and stainless steel brake lines eliminate any spongy brake feel from the pedal.

For the LP400, Lachute Performance has chosen the classic Turini style alloy wheel from Speedline and added distinctive LP centre caps. There are two tire options to choose from; the Dunlop SP SPORT 600 or the RE-11 from Bridgestone. The test car was equipped with the latter.

Design: The LP400 is not heavily re-styled from the stock STi relying on the Subaru’s bold styling, but it does have some nice touches for enthusiasts to spot. A mesh-type grille, HID headlights and several LP badges are likely the first to be noticed. A subtle front lip and side skirts add some visual aggression while the LP400’s large rear wing is the boldest statement.

Below that rear wing, the rear fascia has been dressed up with a Japanese domestic manufacturer rear tail-light kit and is the most likely angle of view for those who dare to provoke the LP400 driver.

Driving/utility: It is not overly difficult to make a car go faster by adding a big turbo or supercharger. To make a car faster with better braking and handling takes more skill and engineering. To make a car this quick and responsive while keeping it civilized enough to be a daily driver on the road and a killer while lapping on the track is very rare indeed.

Pilon and his team at Lachute performance have achieved this balancing act with the LP400. The raw acceleration made me laugh out loud down the long front straight on the ICAR circuit. With the turbo’s over-boost valve popping on every up-shift, the LP400 had tons of torque to accelerate out of any corner.

A fairly tight right-hand corner at the end of the straight tested the brakes to their upper limits and they never faded during my hot laps. The steering is firm and precise without kickback.

The confidence offered by the Subaru symmetrical all-wheel drive was most welcome as the track had lots of standing water from the steady downpour of rain that day.

After my test drive, Pilon let us in on the fact that IndyCar and NASCAR driver Max Papis happened to be at the track the day before (in the dry) had tried the LP400 himself and was amazed with its speed and balance.

“Max was all smiles and said he couldn’t think of any changes he would make to the car,” beamed Pilon. “It’s Max Papis approved!”

So how do you get an LP400? You contact Lachute Performance and buy a brand-new STi for $38,195 through them and then add on the $24,795 LP400 package. Although the Subaru warranty is voided because of the modifications to the car, Lachute backs their LP400 for one year or 20,000 km.

“”Most of our customers are very loyal to Subarus and think nothing of modifying them,” Pilon said. “With the LP400 they get better value and a warranty, something they can’t get when doing it themselves.”

It is not cheap to go this fast, but to have a race car and a road car in one, plus a warranty is a great deal. Besides, after a day at the track you can put the kids in the back seats and go to Dairy Queen for a treat. I only wish I had the driving skills of Papis to drive this special STi to the “Max.”
