there's days where i want to retire to a place like that. and then i remember i'd have to give up my car for it, and i can't compromise like that.

I could picture myself erecting and maintaining some wind turbines for the village. That would keep me busy and satisfy my drive to tinker.

That reminds me, i keep meaning to look into the local statutes about installing a small wind turbine on my roof...

Combined with some battery storage, I'm pretty sure it could supply 75% of my typical lighting/appliances load...

Thanks to file-share filtering at work that blocked the village picture I was really confused at first because this is what I was seeing in @korhun message you quoted, and I was thinking "Man, @Ultramaroon must really love urban life"

I am a city boy. The huts on a green mountain top may look idyllic but unless you grew up under those conditions you would get very bored very quickly. If you brought in enough modern comforts (such as electricity) that scene would very quickly change and it would no longer be the serene picture it is now but still not have everything a true city would. Just look at what happened to the Inuit people when tech and power was made available. The simple and peaceful life gave way to one of waste and conflict in just a couple of generations. I guess the moral of the story is that you can have one lifestyle or the other but when you try to combine both everything falls apart.

True story, I went to England a few years back at the end of January. My mom asked why would I ever want to go to England in the winter because it's cold there. During my trip it was in the teens here while it was in the high 30s, low 40s in England. The last day of my trip it was sunny and nearly 50. Didn't rain the whole time, but rained the day I left.

I'm not looking forward to spending the money since I'm tight, but I am looking forward to the trip. It should be a pretty good one.

Keep in mind that the only things of interest in Iceland are the differences in landscape and views from most of the rest of the world. Those landscapes and view can be spectacular (like the pic) in summer but nothing but a sea of white in winter. You also only get about 5 or 6 hours of sun in the winter. The sun doesn't even rise until around 11am and then sets before 4pm. I know several people that have gone there over the years. The ones that went in summer said it was breath taking. The ones that went in winter said they could have done the same things at home. Just pointing out that temperature is only one of several considerations to keep in mind on deciding when to go. There is a valid reason it is so much cheaper in the winter.

Well, it will be towards the end of Winter (March) so hopefully I'll catch some in-between seasons luck, but we'll see. I mostly want to see the waterfalls, so they don't have to be green technically.

It's not even that. They are just letting people loan so much they are putting themselves at a crazy high debt to income ratio. Two of my friends, against recommendation, put them selves in this position.

First is a married couple, one kid. He is sole bread winner but makes 6 figure strait commision. They got a $300K+ loan no money down. They just got this place in december. He killed it last year, this year he is making a couple grand a month less than normal. They just accepted an offer to sell their place recently because they are just bleeding out. At what they are getting it is enough to put them back at zero.

Another couple, unmarried, no kids. She makes good money, he is a goof and makes just enough to afford is stupid truck payment. She bought the place in her name only, it was just under $300. They are a $400 disaster away from being broke.

It's cool to have a nice place, but if you are so over extended you are house poor, what is the point and why are banks allowing this
