Hatch Only Era WRX

Wasn't there a period where we only had a Hatch for wrx/sti? I thought the 08-11 was Hatch only?

I can't find anything online about it with my searches so I'm wrong, crazy or right... Idk

08-14 there was a hatch version of the WRX and STI. Earlier than that, the STI was only available as a sedan.

Hopefully when the next gen WRX releases we will see the hatch again.

Being in Vermont, I can attest that I never saw an STI in sedan form through the years of 08-10. I know the wrx had a sedan, but the sti I think was hatchback only until 2011 maybe

You are right, the GR (08-14) sedan STI wasn't until 2011.

Is there a reason why people prefer the hatch? Looks, practicality?

Likely because of utility. Maybe they needed more time to design the widebody for the sedan frame?

Probably the reason why hatchbacks are popular to begin with.....

Honestly, I think the hatchback looks better too.
Even with the current Impreza, I feel like the sedan looks too.... sedate?
The hatchback (while also no beauty queen) at least looks purposeful.
Plus practicality can be used to justify this terribly-irrational purchase as perfectly rational.

The real question should be why they even bother with a sedan version.

But weren't they always sedans? Even back in the 80s? Wasn't the hatch only a single iteration? I know there were those cool station wagons but I think only one gen with the hatchback. Or maybe two? I think one with a factory wide body look and one without? I'm rusty on my imprezas

Idk about everywhere, but most fast Subarus I've seen had been wagons/hatches until 2015. For me, given the choice, the 5 door layout is a no-brainer. I guess that I just don't get why anyone actually buys a sedan if there is a hatch version available.

I guess just personal preference, although I read somewhere (IIRC) that the sedans are more dynamically rewarding? I personally like both, but the fat-assed hatchback looks awesome.
