Arrow Want to do a Scion FR-S to Toyota 86 GT/Limited conversion? Check this list.

Name: 86conversion.jpg
Views: 109616
Size: 78.4 KB

This is a list of all differences I've found between the Toyota GT 86/Limited and the Scion FR-S that may be useful for anyone wanting to do a conversion or to see the differences. There may be more that I'm not aware of, so feel free to list them if I've missed any.

I have included images of each part that I could find images for, which is most. I've also included images of the Scion (and in some cases the Subaru) equivalent for comparison.

Edit: -If anyone has part numbers, I can add them to the list as that would be useful for anyone wanting to do a conversion.

Edit2: -Seen quite a few people in the thread say "Why did they take that out? I want that!" You can let Toyota/scion know that you want those options, do so at Toyota.com, Toyota.ca, Scion.com, and Scion.ca, they all have "Contact us" or "Contact" buttons hidden at the bottom of their pages or just click the links I gave you and they'll take you straight to the email contact forms.
-Added image of the under car covers to exterior.

Edit3: -Added Toyota Original accessories from Japan to the bottom of the list.
-Added vanity light sun visor to interior.
-Added image of auto-leveling interior controls.

01/08/2012 Edit4: -Added trunk sensor for smart entry system to exterior section.
- Going to start marking edits with date of edit, not sure why I wasn't before. Format is Day/Month/Year.

07/08/2012 Edit5: -Added Toyota 86 Japan manual, for whatever reference it may be useful, to the bottom of the post. Note: It's in Japanese.

12/08/2012 Edit6: -Added rear leather armrest with red stitching to interior, confirmed as separate piece and included part number.

28/01/2013 Edit7: Finally figured out how to edit the title of the post and correct it. (When editing you have to go advanced to change titles it seems.)

08/02/2013 Edit8: Added part number for Leather Seat Cover under accessory link (Note: This is only a leather cover, not the actual heated leather seat)

23/11/2013 Edit9: Image maintenance - Only thing I couldn't fix was the full under car covers on the 86 GT Limited, if anyone has a pic of this, I'll toss it up.

EXTERIOR:

- Toyota LED HID Headlamps (Not the Subaru lights as they are different)[Will Require LHD version as well as wiring harness, balast, and there is an auto-leveling system, Subaru BRZ in N.A. has this system or a LHD EUDM. There is an interior control for the auto-leveling system as well, listed in interior section.]

Subaru: http://image.motortrend.com/f/346295...e-headlamp.jpg

- Tail lights

Scion: http://alrphotography.zenfolio.com/p...0697#h109ca916

- Fog lights (I've heard these are an incoming option for the FR-S.)
Toyota: http://autoc-one.jp/toyota/86/joycar...hoto/0007.html
Scion(non-existant): http://alrphotography.zenfolio.com/p...0697#h1eeceff7

- Clear Side marker lights
Toyota: http://autoc-one.jp/toyota/86/joycar...hoto/0007.html
Scion(orange instead of clear): http://alrphotography.zenfolio.com/p...0697#h1eeceff7

- Heated, side-rear-view mirrors - Possibly power folding. (Standard on the Canadian FR-S but no power folding. Not sure of US availability.)[Requires LHD version of the glass mirrors, I recall from Toyota Cavalier conversions, the mirror magnifications are different for driver and passenger sides. Unless you go with the non-power folding Canadian versions.]

- 86mm exhaust tips
Toyota: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/attac...0&d=1331045965
Scion: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/attac...3&d=1322712639

- Badgeing:
Toyota logo front and back, back also has Toyota word logo, as well as GT 86 badge on rear(supposedly EUDM special edition badgeing only?), and Toyota center caps for wheels. I'd have to double check on a production FR-S, but the 86 logo on the fender comes in black and red. The GT 86 Limited and GT86 is red, black is the G 86 and RC 86.

Scion center caps: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/attac...7&d=1333574880

- Under car cover.
There are 4 sets of covers under the vehicle. The 4th and rear covers that protects the fuel tank has been reduced to only the left side, with exception to the GT 86 Limited having a full under cover. No other trim level has this, supposedly not even the Subaru BRZ limited has this, only the Toyota GT 86 Limited.
Full under car covers(Thanks to YankBoffin): http://www.covercars.com/cars/pictures/d/384476.jpg
Partial covers (Thanks to PERRIN_Jeff): http://blog.perrinperformance.com/wp...el-550x368.jpg
Legend for Partial Covers pic:
1- Large plastic shield
2- Thick Aluminum Panel
3- Fiberglass woven nylon panel
4- One plastic under panel
Best part is there are threaded holes on both sides to accept the JDM parts.

- Keyless entry system
It seems there is a difference between the Scion and Toyota keyless entry system for the GT86/Limited and may tie into the push start system. The exterior component to this system is the door handles and trunk, they have a touch sensor for locking/unlocking when the key fob is in proximity(0.7m from the door handles or trunk), obviously there's likely a proximity sensor as well or it may be part of the door/trunk sensors. Will cover further in the interior section. [According to toyota.jp, using google translate, both left and right door handles and the trunk have the sensor as well. The BRZ Limited has these sensors. Thanks to r4m3n for pointing out the trunk sensor on the BRZ Limited, prompting me to dig into that.]

Video of how it works on a BRZ Limited(Thanks to quik1987): As I don't want any large images or videos filling up space, I had to remove the link. It kept forcing it to embed instead of just link. The video is on page 4 of this thread.

- High Grade Brake Pads from the GT 86 Limited (high μ pads)

INTERIOR:

- Colour Keyed interior From GT-86 Limited trim in Japan (Black and Red or solid Black with red stitching.)
- Steering wheel and airbag(for logo swap from Scion to 86 logo)[May require a LHD version depending on controls/paddles for A/T and how they're attached.]
- Leather/Alcantara Seats, front and back (with seat heaters and controls for center console, just behind the shifter and in front of the cup holders, the square indent. Rear seats appear to have a red stitching center leather armrest, not sure if one piece with rear bench or separate.)[Will require LHD versions for front seats.]
- Red Shift knob, Shift Boot (black with red stitching - Can't remember if the FR-S ditched the red stitching or not on this piece.)
- Red E-Brake handle (and the Black Brake handle boot, if it's not one piece, has red stitching as opposed to FR-S black stitching.)[May require a LHD version]
- Red Door handle inserts
- Red door sill
- Knee pads on sides of center console and around speakers on doors (Black leather with red stitching as opposed to the FR-S not having them.)
- Rear leather armrest with red stitching: PN SU003-04321 (Thanks to: ZC6BRZ)

- OR Non-colour Keyed interior From GT86 Japan/Europe.
- Airbag (for logo swap from Scion to 86 logo)[Steering wheel only needed if FR-S wheel doesn't have red stitching, but I think it dose have that.]
- Four cloth options [images below][Requires LHD versions]
- E-Brake handle (Black with red stitching, including the Brake handle boot)[May require a LHD version]
- Shit boot and knob (Do not recall if the FR-S has the red stitching or not on both or just one of these.)
- Knee pads on sides of center console and around speakers on doors (leather with red stitching as opposed to the FR-S not having.)
- Rear red stitched leather arm rest: PN SU003-04321 (Thanks to: ZC6BRZ)

- Dual-digital-climate-controls [There's a difference between RHD and LHD versions of the system. Also available on the BRZ Limited in N.A.]
This would replace the FR-S climate control section, below the clock and hazard light button. Has a toggle switch appearance and has 3 knobs with digital displays. The push start button is a part of this piece as well. Heard this requires a different wiring harness also.
Close up(RHD): Link
Close up(LHD)[Also shows dash material where key ignition would be without push start.]: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/attac...2&d=1331044395

- Push button start. [Also available on the BRZ Limited in N.A.]
Button is part of the Dual climate control "panel". There is likely a proximity sensor for the key fob that allows the vehicle to start as this removes the key insertion and leaves that space as flat dash material, so no key ignition slot. This same proximity sensor likely ties into the remote keyless entry system and external door handle touch sensors. [see images above.]

- Toyota Key Fobs(x2), smart entry and start system (This would be the "interior" part of the keyless entry system for the Toyota that ties into the push start. Likely a proximity sensor for the fobs within the car.) Link

- Toyota Floor Mats (Cloth and rubber, have Toyota and 86 logos as opposed to Scion and FR-S logos.)[Will need LHD versions] - Could not find pics of rubber mats for Scion.
Toyota Floor Mat: Link
Toyota Rubber Floor Mat: Link (Toyota changed the image, but there is an 86 logo on them)

Subaru: http://www.ft86club.com/forums/attac...1&d=1339523744
Scion: http://photos.motoiq.com/MotoIQ/Feat.../jsn-002-L.jpg

- Auto-leveling system for LED HIDs, there is a control on the dash(?) for adjusting the Headlamps. [Requires LHD version(?), so likely EUDM or from N.A. Subaru BRZ]
Subaru Auto-leveling controls: http://www.cars101.com/subaru/brz/brz13-dash2.jpg

- Illuminated entry/Door courtesy lamp. FR-S has a reflector in the door as opposed to an actual light. (Subaru BRZ Limited in N.A. has the light as well, hole/space for lighting has been confirmed on the FR-S.)

Thanks, Saber

Still don't see why Scion ditched so many features from the gt86. Would it really make that big of a difference in what we'd be willing to pay for this car here in N America?

Some people were expecting a19-20k price tag. Leaving all the features would have meant 28k or more. A lot of people were already very upset at 24,900.

Of course those who convert it will likely spend several thousand doing so anyways.

The clear marker lights are on my list, but those padded knee pads for the center console should have been included on the US version. I wonder how hard a retrofit would be for those.

At least they withheld the center armrest equally for all three models. And at least we get the elbow pads on the doors.

I honestly wish Toyota got the Limited model so there would be 3 badged cars in N.America.

Agreed! I'll be looking for a set of those. I've got some family in the uk and one is a true car nut, I'll be asking him to get me a set once a few have been smashed up.

It doesn't look like they would be hard to remove, there's a good write up on how to remove the center console, looks pretty straight forward. I'd also like to get the pads from the doors to.

All those things are already for sale on eBay.

So much for not modding this car...why can't we get all those red interior pieces?

I want that steering wheel!

The red interior parts are a no-cost option here in the uk, as long as you've spec'd the £1600 leather seats. Can't have 'em without the leather.

Quite frankly I do not understand this reaction to people wanting the higher trim level. If they had released the higher trim level, it does not mean everyone would have to pay for it.

If they released the different trim levels then people would have been able to choose, so those who wanted the closer to $20k price point could have gone for the Toyota G 86 (heck they could have released both so they could have gone for the Scion FR-S as the G86 equivalent in N.A.), while those of us who are willing to pay more could have selected the Toyota GT86/Limited.

Why is it a common school of thought that having options means you have to pay for them? You do not. That's why they are options, you choose to have them or not. Same goes for trim levels, if you want cheaper then go for a lower trim, if you're willing to spend more pick a higher trim level/options.

Even a mono-spec car like Scion can still do options, look at the mini for example. They have one trim level but so many options you can probably double the base price, if you wanted to. Mono-spec does not mean it has to be optionless nor does it have to mean everyone is stuck buying the same vehicle at the same price.

More options available does not mean the base price will change, only the upper end price would change.

If only someone made an AS1 with leather, HIDs, LED driving lights, push button start, etc. I would bet that you could probably get it for just over $28k.
Trolololo

Most of MINI's options are factory options. Only the driver's lights on ours were installed at the port/dealer. The moonroof, LSD, bonnet stripes, fog lights, etc were all factory installed. All Scions arrive to the ports in the US in the exact same configuration other than color and transmission. Options would change how Scion does business via being "mono-spec".

We'll have a lot more things available as dealer options for the FR-S soon enough. They just aren't getting everything rolled out as quickly as we'd hoped.

I guess I must be a rare bird. I don't like most of the Toyota stuff. It seems like a bunch of "fluff" nonsense that I wouldn't even notice anyway. Also the red/black interior in the Toyota makes it looks very very tacky. I don't even like the red accents on the shoulder part of the seats in the Scion.

I do like the BRZ/GT86 head lights though but the Scion/USDM tail lights are the best as they are less "altezza-ey". I don't like my car looking like an Ebay Special.

Underbody trays: I would like all of those
Badges: inconsequential
KeyFob: inconsequential
Push Button start: eh.. don't care. Owned an S2k and the PBS wasn't anything to spend more $$ for.
Frameless Mirror: inconsequential
EntryDoor courtesy light: inconsequential
Clear Side markers: inconsequential (and kind of ricey looking just like the JDM tail lights and multi color interior.)
Duel Climate control: This isn't a bad feature for anyone who travels with a girl on the other side of the car... Girls run at different temps then guys. What I think would be better then dual climate would be an option for heated seats.

And that's just one man's opinion. Back to your regularly scheduled program.

Edit: BTW, very good compilation and interesting to know the differences.

How about the padding for your knees? The leg area is a bit cramped and I've wished my knees had something softer. Seems like a functional and comfort improvement for driver and passenger (but at what cost?).

I don't think the clear marker light is ricey really. Rather I think the orange is tacky and out of place. This is likely the only exterior mod I'll ever make however.

Agreed though on some of the other bits, including the red on the US seats.
