I have my other foot in the Jeep community, and some of those folks go nuts over Japanese Cherokees that were reimported for use as mail trucks. A '90s Japanese XJ that would sell for $3000 if it were LHD will go for $7K to $10K with the same condition and mileage. There's even a company that specializes in them that routinely lists them for up to $16,000. I don't know if they actually sell them at that price, but they're still in business, so they must be selling them somehow. Is a JDM Cherokee better than a USDM Cherokee? I can't see how. You can't lift or otherwise mod it without damaging its value, and in stock form it does nothing a USDM Cherokee won't do except shine amber light from its fenders. But I'd still like to have one. Because it's something most people can't have. And then I could drive up alongside regular Cherokees and stick my tongue out at them. |

I should have clarified more. I understand the hype from the "unobtanium" perspective. I don't, however, understand the hype from a driving perspective. They aren't really anything extraordinary to drive. They feel like classic 90s JDM Nissans, which I personally like, but its not like "ZOMGFTWBBQ GREATEST CAR EVARRR!!!!" that so many try to claim lol

Because if this forum placed standards on who could post here they'd have to ban 90% of the current active accounts.

My neighbor has a RHD MGB that he bought in England while he was working there, then brought back with him.
It's not illegal, just impractical for many people. He did it for the lulz and enjoys it.

Like others say, the car has to pass DOT equipment laws, and has to pass local emission laws. Most imports won't pass because of light laws, let alone emissions. Older cars, as discussed, become exempt to a fine point, so do your research.

RHD itself?
Not at all. A car that can't pass FMVSS/NHTSA requirements? Yes. LHD or RHD in that case.

Driving a RHD car in a LHD car country absolutely sucks. My work gets prototype JDM demo electric cars and I've driven them a few times. As others have said, the absolutely worst thing is making left turns at intersections on a green "yield' light. You can't see approaching cars. Same is true in diagonal space parking lots. Leaving a street side parking space is scary. It's a PITA when you enter/exit gated parking lots. And drive throughs. If you ever watch someone driving a JDM car, you will see that 50% of the time they turn on the windshield wipers when making lane changes or turning because they mistake the wipers stalk for the turn signal stalk.
I used to think it would be fun to have a classic JDM car but I think I would just end up hating to drive it and end up selling it. |
