From what she described, I'm not sure a dash cam would help. If I understand correctly, she turned left in front of oncoming traffic. All a dash cam would show is that she turned left in front of oncoming traffic.
Are left turns into oncoming traffic legal in Canada? I doubt it. Quote:

Last time I hired a lawyer for a traffic violation, it cost me $1000. Lawyers are expensive. I am glad you are ok. Good Luck! It sucks, but it may be time to drive a beater. I was paying almost 300$ per month insurance after my accident.

Ow! Glad you're ok...
On a side note I'm really surprised we haven't saw the "It'll buff out" comment yet...

Brutal. Hope your injuries heal quickly.
Judging from the extent of damage, maybe a lawyer can prove the other driver was speeding. That might help share fault. Which airbags deployed, front, side, either? Take care, keep us posted on the outcome. |

That really sucks - what an awful accident, and at least you're here to tell about it.
Like a few people have said, it was your failure to yield. It sucks that that is how it is, because I've witnessed people turning left on a yellow with the next car being 50m away doing 55+ in a 35mph zone. There should be ample tiem for them to turn with a car being that far away and the designated speed limit, and the fact that at that distance they should not be going through the intersection, but it does happen - probably a lot more often than it should. There is absolutely nothing justified about the multiple laws that that individual is breaking, and how they're endangering people driving like that, but we unfortunately share the road with more than a handful of people like that. When I'm in that sort of situation I just pull out into the intersection while I'm waiting to turn - during rush hour traffic there is usually always 2 - 4 cars that run the light on yellow, but that way you can turn when the light goes red because at that point you're stuck in the intersection, and everyone waiting at it can see you at that point, and knows what you need to do - it isn't your fault if you're sitting there respecting the rules of the road, and waiting to make your turn and several asshats run the light instead of stopping. But anyway - again, I'm really sorry to hear about that. Maybe I played too much video games when I was younger, but I'm just prepared for, and expect that sort of BS to happen whenever I'm driving. I hope everything works out as well as it can for you, and I'm sorry for the loss of your car |

More on topic...The laws in Ontario are not that different from the U.S. ones already stated. I don't know that there is much a lawyer can do but the first consult is usually free so it is worth a shot. The only hope you would have is if you could prove beyond a doubt (dash cam would help there if it caught the light) that the other driver ran the red but as OP said it was still yellow.

Dash cam is definitely the first thing going in the next car - it likely would save me from getting nailed with beingly fully at fault for the accident because it actuallly was not busy, just me and the guy coming down, he was a long was off so I had no idea it was even about to happen. If I had to guess, he was going 90+ as it was 7 in the morning and he was from being really far off within more than reasonable stopping distance to the side of my car a moment later ... 5 of 6 airbags deployed, all except the driver side curtain. See below, no skid marks, the only tire marks are from my car getting spun - I find it very hard to believe you could go full throttle into someone without braking or swerving if you were paying attention :/ but lesson learned, never lefting again until people are stopped D: .... |

I'll be looking at closer to $350 I think ... which sucks cause I just got my own policy and had a squeaky clean record D': .... but apparently they don't care what I drive, it's pretty much staying up like that.

Yah, I'm pretty bruised up, sore and got some nice cuts from my seatbelt. Mostly I'm just heartbroken and want to cry every time I see an FRS or BRZ ... The day after every single FRS and BRZ at SEMA was on my Instagram feed ......

Well you retained your sense of humour better than I would under the circumstances!
I was almost in tears when I got a stone dent the size of a dime in my fender after owning the car only a week.

Scrolling down to the second picture made me cringe harder than the Grinch waking up in Santa's lap.
Sorry for your loss, but glad to read that you still have your life. |
