Almost at 100k miles boosted with 312whp. My engine came apart at 104k miles for a head gasket change. Shop owner said internals were still in tip top shape and wouldn't be surprised if it ran another 100k miles.
I'd say a good tune at 300whp will be decent.

Its not just what it can handle... but for how long. every engine will eventually break down.

A 300whp FRS that is tracked often and runs big sticky tires is going to grenade its tranny and engine much sooner than the same car just putts around town.

Are you running on e85? What kit are you using?

If you stop and think about it, this car's Superpower is low weight. Low weight is what makes the FRS feel engaging every-time you go for a drive regardless of how you are driving; it is evident all the time, unlike power that can only be unleashed on the rare occasion.

So that is the good news.

The bad news is that in order to make the car light, every component on the car was made as light as possible. That includes engine, gearbox and differential components. When you design for maximum lightness, you don't leave a lot on the table to deal with extra power.

I would say that this engine is not going to like a lot of HP. I would expect that even a modest amount of boost is going to have a significant effect on the engine life. If 3-4 years of DD with 300 boosted HP is good for you, then perhaps you are good to go.

I want the engine to last the 10 years that I expect to be driving the car. A head gasket failure as experienced by Fumanchu1 when the car is 7-8 years old would be time to put the car down since it would cost more than the car was worth at that point.

Exactly! No engine is safe from failure and hard driving (track duty) increases the likelihood at a higher level than most realize.

Exactly! When I added up all the initial costs to add FI -- and then a good tune... and then beef up the clutch... and on and on... it just made more sense to go find a nice used Corvette (C6) so I could get some kick-ass off-the-line driving experience w/o wondering if I'm over stressing the rig.

I'm not saying modding the 86 to get 250+ bhp isn't something to do, everyone's rationale (want to track, want to ______) is different as well everyone is free to spend their hard-earned money as they deem appropriate.

IMHO... you get a certain type of rig based on how it's designed and why it was designed. Take any rig outside of the general parameters of the design and you affect something else in the design (e.g., bigger engine could translate to clutch and tranny issues).

I do find it interesting that as successive model years arrive, there hasn't been any substantial change (i.e., increase) in bhp. THAT has to be more than Toyobaru not wanting to take food of the plates of aftermarket suppliers and tuners.

This sounds good. Stock our car is pretty short of 200 whp so I think this would be a big improvement especially if it gets rid of the torque dip. Gives you great reliability as well most likely.

He's making fun of an infamous BRZ owner named Mike Cina. He fabricates his own parts (that always look kinda janky) and makes huge claims like having the world record for NA FA20s at 221.3whp. His proof usually consists of a crumpled-up time sheet from a drag strip, or a terrible-quality video of a dyno that doesn't really show anything.
