Input

So I'm about to purchase a turbo within the next week. I am having a hard time deciding what turbo to buy though.

I live in California but I cannot run a supplied tune due to the fact that I have to many modifications to my car already. So I cannot run the carb compliant kit. So I'm not trying to be flashy or loud via blow out valve.

I want the works stage 2 tuner kit but the turbo look incapable of performing. I have a built fa20 so I'm looking to make some power. I'm also looking to push around 12psi.

My price range is $5000 for the whole kit. Having money for an oil cooler would be nice also.

What kit do you suggest?

JDL, Maperformance or SBD (cant believeim recommending it.) These 3 are your best bet for price range.

A slightly used quality kit would leave you room for an oil cooler. Greddy?

I would recommend selling your car, and a nice WRX.
You don't have to worry about silly smog legal nonsense, it has more hp right out of the box than any boosted 86.
Sure it doesn't look as good but eh? You got power to back it up.

HKS has a good kit for under 5k but you wont have any money left for a good oil cooler lol.

Maperformance has good oil cooler for $450 which is one of the cheapest when you are looking for good oil coolers.

You have a built FA20, and your budget for forced induction is $5,000?

What other supporting mods do you have? Do you have the appropriate fuel system upgrades?

Is a 12.5:1cp ratio
with manley forged pistons
skunk2 con rods

check out my garage

built it myself and no issues yet except for the tune which im not going to do until fi. I have 6000 miles on the built engine. No issues except for cold start problems due to tune and high rpm knock which the ecu is learning to correct over time.

Waynes tune has helped me out a lot but im going to take it to a tuner right after the turbo

The Works Stage 2 CARB compliant turbo kit is pretty capable. We have seen over 300whp on our dyno with e85. Keep in mind that our dyno does read low (stock BRZ/FRS put down around 135whp), so that number is pretty conservative. This is also at our legal boost level of 12psi. There are other turbos that bolt up to our kit and you can always run a boost controller, but then it's not CARB compliant by the letter of the law. If you gave us a call at 707-933-3893 we would love to discuss what our kit is capable of.

One week away from pulling the trigger and you're not sure... I suggest that you hold off for another few weeks..

Yes sell his built fa20 and buy a stock wrx. 300 crank hp at 3300 lb's is a lot different than 300 wheel hp at 2700 my friendo, and that would be on a stock block.
