I still have two pairs of ramps, two pairs of jack stands, three floor jacks and some assorted bottle jacks.

I'm thrifty/cheap so when I first unwrapped my Christmas present, I sat there slack-jawed thinking to myself "OMG, shit, these are sooooooo expensive." Gotta admit that they are super nice. Click, click, plug, whirrr... done. All four wheels swapped in minutes. The best part is seeing my wife's joy over thinking of such a perfect gift.

Mostly my wife's and stepdad's. My garage filled up when my mom passed. I still can't open the drawers in that filing cabinet without choking up but I have no problem inching my way around it. My own brand of crazy, I guess.

I can picture her standing there beaming watching you playing with your new toy.

I think there are more DIYers in here than the OP thinks. The car is easy to work on.

I've done everything to my car myself except weld in the AFR O2 sensor bung. In my apt parking lot, or a garage floor and with minimal special tools. Not everyone can do it and the fear of warranty denial is real. I understand why some don't work on thier cars but I think most on here do

Garage
After working on my own car quite a bit and getting tired of it (I even brought it to a shop a bunch of times, but the damn thing just needed so much fixing in so many places), I think there's a few reasons:
-Some things are really annoying or tedious
-Some things are much much harder to do by yourself without all the equipment a shop has
-Getting cuts on the hands sucks
-Getting things dirty sucks
-If your car is nice enough (sports cars are definitely shifting towards the high end now), there's not much to mod, and routine maintenance done all in one visit by a shop is very convenient. E.g. modern Porsches, there's not really any sensible mods to do to them...everything is well sorted and track ready from the factory, the aero is very good, and there's not much weight to throw out without ruining the comfort. All the maintenance is a pain in the ass but infrequent so just drop it off at the shop and pay up once a year.

That said there's non-trivial hassle just bringing the car to the shop, so when I get a car again I'm going to try to do as much as I can myself, if it's a high-maintenance kind of car. Obviously, without a lift you're limited to only certain things. One day when I have the means, I would like a garage with a lift so I can hoist the car up and have fun planning mods all day long :P

For me it is knowledge, total lack of tools, and space. My drive way for my little apartment is crappy dirt, so I don't even have a paved place to jack my car up. I need to find some car people near me, but I just don't like people enough to try very hard. Although now that I can walk to work I don't actually need a dd so I might try harder.
