There are some deals on Nissan Frontier (smaller V6) , or Tundra's from 2000-2006 ... but again you have to keep your eyes pealed.. daily. Tacoma's get gobbled up , clean reasonably priced examples. Honda Ridgeline isn't a truck... it's a Subaru Brat on steroids. The Mitsubishi Raider looks interesting... looking into that.
They're more than crazy. You'd have to be stupid to buy them instead of new most of the time.

I have almost 160K on my FRS so it's basically worthless in the re-sale market.

Last time I checked KBB was under $9K for my car!!

Just wait another 10 years until it hits cult status. then you can get $8000 for a car with 200K miles on it as long as it's not too rusty. Until then, just enjoy the car.

I'm a sucker who bought the car brand spanking new off the lot with 4 miles on her. I decided to go big and have the interior all redone in leather (cloth sucks). Out the door I was 30k in the hole -still in debt lol. Honestly I would do it again even with the resale value being nearly half what I paid.
I don't plan on selling the car and if I did it would be only to buy another one. I love my car and I treat it like it is a GTR, others may value it lower but its an amazing vehicle thats super fun to drive, cheap to maintain/easy to work on.
I still owe 12k on it... STILL (bought it in 13). I never regretted it once, I didn't buy this for the resale value I bought this because the idea of a small boxer engine on a small sports coupe thats RWD is exciting and something I can't pass up. I will never regret this purchase even now when Im over 60k and I owe 12k on it, I drive with a smile on my face.

I completely agree with you. I got mine in '12 and treat it like a much more expensive car. I keep looking at other cars to buy, but I just can't bring myself to get rid of my twin. And yes, it still puts a smile on my face almost every day.

Mine was 20k brand new in 2012, bare bones base model. To sell mine, it'd probably be around 14k, which isn't a bad drop for 5 years. Resale isn't too bad, but i'm gonna drive this thing til it dies. Then revive it with a swap.

Every time I look at how much I owe, I take a look at the KBB value, and it seems I'm always going to be negative on my loan until the car is below $8k. :/ but oh well. Still enjoying it anyway.

The trick is finding a truck/SUV that no one liked, then pick that up.

You can find Ford Expeditions and Excursions (non-diesel) for dirt cheap.

I've got a 2000 Ford Excursion V10 4wd that I paid $6k for with 165k miles on it.

Those engines can do 300k easily. And since it's not my daily driver, I don't worry about mileage much (it gets about 13mpg).

My buddy found a 98 Expedition 4wd with the 5.4 and about 180k miles. It was in great condition and he paid all of a thousand dollars for it.

If SUVs aren't your thing, you might look into the Gen 1 Tundras or an older Nissan Titan.

But honestly, with a trailer, an SUV might just be the ticket. I like that I can haul stuff in the back of my X and keep it locked up and out of the rain. I even hauled a dirt bike back there one time, using the tie down points it has in the back.

And I absolutely love my Excursion. It's become kind of a cult vehicle. Most people who have one, love them.

I forgot this things even existed but I'll probably end up with one as a tow vehicle. The cheapest 4x4 that can tow is what I'm looking for and they're probably a little more capable than the avalanche. My first landlord had one with like 300,000 miles on it and said it was the best vehicle he ever had.

A 2500 Suburban with the 8.1L would also be AWESOME but they're hard to find.

V10 Excursions are easy to find though. If you get one, go to Ford-Trucks.com and join their forums. They're great.

All I see on craigslist are a bunch of salvaged rebuilt cars. I believe thats the major cause of driving down the resale value of clean titles. People just want stuff for cheap. When I bought mine salvaged I knew I wasnt going to sell it. I see these cars going for such low prices I wonder how the rebuilders even make a profit. To give a relative number I am currently $13.5K into my rebuild including the cost of car fees and shipping with 95% of parts purchased. This is before frame damage repair which is estimated to be around 2k.

At the end of the day, who cares. EVEN if the car is worth $0 today, does that affect the drivability? No.

Even if the car dropped $25K in value from the day you bought it to zero that's like first year depreciation on a maserati.

Just be glad you're not losing an FRS every year from buying a maserati.

I'll never understand why people care about the depreciation of a car going in knowing well that it will lose value. I don't drive a car worrying about how much money it's going to be worth in the future. It's the same argument that some people have for keeping the car as pristine as possible. Are you seriously not going to rip off the plastic to keep the door sills perfect for the next guy?

Please wait while I don't bang my girlfriend so that I can save her value for the next guy. Jeez.

I'll say this, you will have wasted money if you did not get enjoyment out of it, but if you maximized the amount of enjoyment you had, it's money well-spent.

A lot of people aren't financially savvy enough to think of a car this way, but are financially savvy enough to think they're making a wise gamble on re-sale value and plan to 'upgrade' to something else in 3-4 years. The same kind of people that buy a car based solely on the monthly payments.

"What can I get for $XXX/month and trading in my car?" is probably uttered a frightening amount of the time.

Especially people in the Subieyota family where a 4Runner, Tacoma, Forester, Camry, Legacy etc. doesn't lose more than a couple thousand over a few years. Suddenly being $10k+ in the hole probably had some loyal Toyota and Subaru customers blowing gaskets.

Especially after their salesman reassured them "Oh of course resale will be excellent it's a Toyobaru! Just check out our buyback program blah blah blah."

I totally agree with you, but I also understand why people are griping. But it's their fault for not doing enough research or allowing themselves to trust a salesman.
