Maybe they couldn't cope the Emissions Standards. I can see that Australia has the Euro 5b standards and gets the engine changes, but Europe has the Euro 6b standard and gets nothing.

In fact I suppose it will have a higher cost to keep an inventory of different pistons, intake manifolds & air-intake, fuel systems, headers etc. I think the 1st version wasn't differentiated so much per area.

At least, they deserve an applause for this. It looks that they did the best to provide an actual upgrade.
Yeah, I agree, the total cost (parts and R&D) to do all of the changes would'nt have been cheap.
Gives and insight into how much even small changes in spec affect EVERY other part in the car.

I saw on reddit that the Subaru has a confirmed Brembo performance package upgrade, has there been any evidence that Toyota will offer different trim levels?

So far Toyota hasn't released any info about that.

Scion has a FAQ on their web page and that is one that they answer. They said that the 17 will remain mono spec but they are "considering" more trim levels after that. There is no word on if there will be a special edition but I don't think that is likely.

grmn gt86 is still better, a recap

2.0-liter flat-four engine that delivers 216 horsepower — 16 more than the stock model — at 7,300 rpm, and 160 pound-feet of torque at 5,200 rpm thanks in part to new intake and exhaust manifolds and low-friction internal component stock one does 151 pound-feet of torque at 6,600 rpm.

btw is there any reviews of this? like has someone perhaps translated a japanese review?

This is not a mass-production car.

It's not. They won't sacrifice the low COG for a v6

Don't hold your breath. By different trims they mean more like Europe, Japan and Australia have always had. They have always said there will never be high power versions that was not their vision or goal.

Tcoat why would you think that? There have been numerous 86 and FR-S special/limited editions in the past. Models like the Blackline and the GT Yellow Limited. Agreed, some have not made their way to North America but, some have. So, why would they change now? They may not have any great “power” increases but special accents and options will, in most cases, always find a home. It comes down to what Toyota in America and Canada want to add to spice up their particular mix.

I should clarify that I was referring strictly to the North Americian ex Scion market.
I feel there will be no special edition for 2017 as it really is not required. Special editions are intended to create buzz and bring a car car back into the limelight. They are not a money maker and of course the intent is not to just give a handful of guys something different.
Scion released special editions every other year and 17 is an off year anyway. They also have no need to build hype this year.
I could be way off the mark but do not think we will see anything for 18. If we get trim levels for the 18s we may not see anything then either.

Subaru built the Series.yellow for this coming year and has trim levels. I don't see why Toyota wouldn't celebrate the 86 coming to the line with a special edition.
