Are you using the right cable?

I am not sure about ipda, but this is my experience from using an adroid

cell phone and car head unit GPS communication can be done over BT. Which means a data connection is not needed.
How ever, you need to be aware that when you try to charge your cellphone using a USB plug, as long as the phone is detecting a data connection between the phone and w/e you plugged into,it will charge, but it will limit the battery recharge to 500mah (IIRC)

The only way to solve is to get a pair of cable with shorted data, which allows your cell phone to charge at the normal rate (as when you plug your cell phone into a normal wall charger)

I'm using the correct cable. I think you missed the fact that the touch screen on the head unit is touch capable and works back to the app on the phone/tablet. While that is active I can still play music off the device through the data cable as well. Have you tried the mirror link display with your android?

Yes, I was playing around with it on my friend's car.
like i said, communication is done wirelessly a data cable between devices is not required.

If you are using it via bluetooth for sound only navigation, then you are not able to see any of the visual directions on the head unit. This also prevents you from responding to the redirection request to avoid traffic jams, the warnings of hazards upcoming on the road, etc without the phone in hand as well. So you will basically be having to juggle both the head unit controls and the phone controls to be able to get somewhere. That just sounds like a bad idea to me. And if you are just using the Bluetooth audio feature of the head unit, why bother with a head unit? Just install a DSP with a Bluetooth module and a charging mount for the phone/tablet in the dash where the head unit was. There are plenty of how-to's on that topic.
