The grip dilemma - tires
Any idea of how wide of a tire you can stick out back without rubbing? I know it probably won't be known until people try. 215s are a joke! I like to stick to the road. While getting the back end out a little is fun, I'd love a 245/255 out back. It seems the car is set up to be neutral/fun to drive for the average-joe. I'm assuming with just 200hp and the solid chassis, it's probably very easy to control when losing grip. I like my cars on rails

what makes you think you won't stick to the road on 215s?

Really hoping a 17x9 wheel with 245s on will fit without issue. Want to know before I order some Hankook R-S3s!!

Somewhat hard to find 17x9 in 5x100. I'm doing 17x8 +35 with 235/40 all around.

I could have sworn we had a couple of good threads on this topic in the tire and wheels section? OP, you might look there as well as there was some good info posted.

Well then you should know that sticking fatter tires out back and leaving skinnier ones on the front (which your op implies is your planned strategy) is going to shift your car's balance to serious understeer. And going super-fat on all four corners will numb the steering feel this car is being so praised for.

245 is not super-fat though, relax.

I would say get some V7 STi Goldies (WRB BRZ) 17x7.5 and run 225 Square for Daily Driving. Than rock some 245 Square Hoosier A6's for Stock class AutoX on the stock wheels.
(You may substitute whatever wheel you want) |

I think the first thing to change would be tire compound/type rather than tire size lol...these are summer touring after all, changing them to summer performance or high performance or something should see a benefit already.

I can agree with that. The stock tires sound like fun. Will definitely use them until they die and then decide if I want OEM tires again or go with something different. |

The contact patch between a narrower tire and a thicker tire on this car should be roughly the same given the weight and PSI are held constant. It's the shape of the contact patch that changes which, using a thicker tire, will help cooling of the compound and that is what increases your effective grip.
That said, while I was at the auto show I did some simple measurements (sticking my arm under the fender) and I don't think you can fit that thick of a tire on this car. The front doesn't have much room at all... I think 235 at the most with some negative camber. The rears maybe 245 since they gain negative camber on compression? Either way, square setup would probably be the best in terms of maintaining a neutral handling feel. |
