Next to most cars the 86 is just really thin skinned and I think that's what makes it look a bit cheap. Never known a car that had its panels dent as easy as on this car. From the wrong angles, the comparison to other cheap Toyotas (Corolla, Prius, Yaris) really starts to come to mind.. but from the right angles it has some wonderful sports car design.

Compared to the wife's 17 Impreza the body panels on the FRS are like 1/4 inch boiler plate. I managed to put a 4 inch crease in the rear corner by brushing up against it with a dollar store laundry basket.
I have many many dings from highway debris but most would have happened even if I was driving a tank. Really don't think they are much thinner than most cars in the class. People would scream if they added a couple of hundred pounds to make them thicker skinned.

For me, the only really cheap feeling/looking part is the dash top. The models with the stitched "leather" on the door tops, speakers, dash face, console sides, etc seem just fine for the price/style of the car. The dash itself, including the center stack is simple and clean....just what it should be like on a driver-centric vehicle.

The development money was well spent on the actual hardware. Non car folks just see the styling and think what they will. "If it looks like a sports car, it probably costs like a sports car". At that point, does it look like a Vette or a Miata to the observer?

Get people all the time asking about the price and mistaking it for a new Supra or Skyline lol.

I think the point is they don't realize it's a Scion/Subaru until they ask/get close enough to see the badge.

Yeah, like this:

Unfortunately even the cheapest configuration is like almost 3x the cost of an 86, then goes way up from there. And it isn't street legal here in Canada, so it can't get itself to the track.

Definitely something to look into if I had more money than I know what to do with

No. It’s not actually. The panels are no more thin than most any other car on the market. I appraise cars for a living.

Yes the body panels and even the hood on this car are super thin and light, which were specifically engineered to help keep the overall weight down and the performance up. I was completely shocked when I first opened the hood at the dealership in how featherweight light it felt. Compared to my MR2 hood, it feels like a sack of potatoes compared to the hood on this car. First day I drove it to work I already had rock chips and dents on the hood Its the little tradeoffs we take to have the great light dynamic driving experience these cars provide...

The hood is aluminum. To get that weight in steel it would indeed be flimsy.
