Passenger seat belt warning when I put phone on seat!???

Does this happen to anyone else? Ill put down my iphone on the passenger seat and within minutes the seat belt warning will go off as though someone is sitting there. I was under the impression tehse sensors requires a certain amount of weight to go off (50lbs)?

Could it be my sensor is defective?

It does not use a weight sensor its capacitance based your phone is setting it off because of the battery in it probably

My phone does this too in my BRZ premium. I wondered if it was because it's a wirelessly rechargeable phone?

I have found that the alarm goes off only when my phone is plugged into the USB port. When it's not plugged it does not go off. I have an iPhone 5.

Mine doesn't do this. I put my laptop (sleep mode) on the seat, my iPhone (either plugged in or not, and my blackberry. No issues. When someone sits there, it displays the airbag on status - so mine is working like it should, but from what I read, it shouldn't work this well. No complaints here!

guess only way is to continue tying the passenger seat belt even when no one is there...prolly easier to buy a buckle part on ebay so that i dont have to strap the whole thing

It's the power cord that is not the phone that sets the alarm

Isn't there a section in the manual that specifically talks about this?

"Also, if luggage or electronic devices are placed on the front passenger’s
seat, this may adversely affect the ability of the system to determine deployment.
This may prevent the front passenger’s frontal airbag ON and OFF
indicators from working properly. Check that the indicators work properly.
When the OFF indicator turns off and the ON indicator illuminates, the front
passenger’s frontal airbag may deploy during a collision. Remove luggage
and electronic devices from the front passenger’s seat."

Good thing the EU model doesn't seem to have that sensor. There's basically always stuff lying on mine
