I laughed and then I cried at this thread.

Not sure if serious but I do love me the lfa exhaust. F1 at its best for the street

I'm totally serious. I know it will never be exact, but I know Ferrari spent a ton of time tuning the exhaust to get a certain sound, as I'm sure Toyota did with the LFA. What I think would make it possible as jm1681 said, is dampen the lowend and accentuate the high end, make it very very fast revving, and you're very close to there.

Its not just sound. It's how insanely fast the car revs. Many small pistons revving very fast. We just couldn't ever duplicate it. If you lightened everything up, strengthened everything, and then on top of that got a custom exhaust which was tuned like a musical instrument that would be the closest you could get...and it still wouldn't be that close.

Just drop a BMW V10 into it, if it can fit into an E30 it will fit in the 86

Okay, forget how fast it revs and focus solely on pitch. Not the dynamic note and harmonics of a 10-cylinder engine, but high pitch alone

yeah, kinda missing a few cylinders.

Engine design has a huge effect on exhaust note, and then the exhaust system itself has another effect. Cylinder angle, such as inline, flat, 15°V, 45°V, 60°V 90°V, cylinder firing order, number of cylinders, equal or unequal length headers, exhaust and intake valve timing, compression, intake tract shape, blah blah blah... This is just the obvious mechanical stuff.

In short, no. the FA20 could never really sound like the LFA. One may be completely built from the ground up to rev high and rev fast, but the note and character would be entirely different.

seriously dude? do you understand that you are missing 6 pistons to even remotely get close to an LFA sound.

Problem is, the LFA makes 2.5x as many "primary pulses". You can filter out lower frequencies but the LFA's "fundamental frequency" (in some sense) is 2.5x higher.

To imitate the sound I think you'd have to have variable length exhaust pipes that let you "phase" the sound to achieve a higher note, but you'd need to vary the length according to engine rpm to get the effect to work at more than just one engine speed.

Nevermind though, I think 4 bangers sound great when they hit ~8600rpm :P

Now THAT is a good answer See that people? No sarcastic or nasty comments necessary, and an intelligent answer that even a simpleton like ME can understand was had

And I agree Still, I wouldn't mind finding the path to a tone that barks and howls more than roars and bellows
