'14 BRZ Ltd. - Rough Idle

Hey all,

My super duper stock BRZ Limited (2014) has been idling a bit rough. The revs aren't bouncing all over the place, but the engine just doesn't feel like she's running phenomenally smooth - is anyone else running into this problem?

Not sure if I need to make the trip to the dealer to get it looked at!

Edit: I'm asking because with my last '13 FR-S I don't ever recall having it like that, then again I was on an OFT flash for a while too...

Thanks,
David

Because its super new, your dealer might have put in 87 octane gas by accident. Burn the whole tank and fill up some 93 shell v power.

Fixed that for you.

Oh shoot that's a great point. No CEL and not as rough as my FR-S was with the ECU issue. I suspect the gas issue may be the problem. Sigh what the hell...

I believe their mentality is something along these lines:

It's not my car, so why should I care? I'll cut corners and save what I can.

I have 5000 miles on my '14, and it's doing something similar. It seems to run fine at cruise, and it's not so rough at idle that it quits. I figured I would just keep an eye on it for a while and take it in if it got any worse, but for now it doesn't seem to be affecting driving performance.

I've got a brand new 14. That does funny idle things too. If I come to an abrupt stop from high speed it dips to 500 and gives a bad rattle. It Also randomly dips to 500 at stopped idle. It seems to be caused by gas brand. So far first tank from dealer was great but in California we don't have ethanol free gas and my first fill up gave me crickets and the stutter in idle. Shell seems better for stutter but worse for crickets then Chevron.

Glad to know I'm not the only one then - my car's a 01/2014 produced car (you can see your month by looking at the sticker between the driver's door and the chassis. It's not AS rough as the FR-S problem I had before which was way more sever and felt like the car was gonna stall, but this one is still unsettling nevertheless.

I learned to drive in my dad's 1970 MGB that he had set up so that it would not idle. You had to feather the gas at stop lights to keep it running. My own first car was a 1971 Triumph TR6 with a performance engine that sounded like three Harley V Twins side by side under the hood. I had the twin carbs leaned out so that it idled (mostly) around 600 rpm, but the needle was always somewhat spastic.

I haven't had a sports car in a long time, but after those early days I don't guess I was expecting a performance engine to idle like a sewing machine, even with electronic ignition and fuel injection. As long as it's not quitting on me, I'm not very concerned.

It's not easy to find ethanol-free fuel in my area either, and my crickets come and go intermittently. Now that you've mentioned that, I'll have to start paying attention to differences between the brands.
