I recently picked up a 2013 FRS back in June. I have put about 2,000miles on it. Should I go ahead and switch to motul oil 300? I dont know what is in there now, since i bought it from a dealership.

I changed mine at 500 miles. There was significant chips in the differential but the transmission was clean. The car was a Bitch to shift through gears. Motul 300 made everything butter smooth minus second gear. You could try Miller's Oil a shot too.

My HyperBlue is at 1.2k miles, this is my first manual so I'm still learning so I feel like half the time when it's clunky, it's probably me. Should I still change the fluid?

Yes, and change it to something better

I recently switched to Pentosin MTF. After about 1k miles and some cold and warm weather I can say it feels pretty decent. Definitely more of a mechanical feel from the transmission, somehow feels less damped. I'm not sure I'm a big fan of the new feel, but oh well. The fluid works a lot better when cold though, no more clunkiness into 2nd when it's 10* F outside

I just changed mine for the second time last weekend, as well as the diff and the engine oil. It was about 26K since the last time I swapped it. I just felt like doing something nice for my car.

Compared to the first time I swapped out the factory stuff, the tranny was much cleaner and the drain plug had about 1/8 of the stuff on it that it did previously.

The diff came out looking nearly new! I was kind of bummed I spent the money on changing it, but how do you know without checking? Oh well, it's a happy diff I suppose.

Motul Gear 300 smells like ass! Not my ass, but someone's.

If you think the tranny is bad, flushed the rear diff for a real wake up call.

I thought I'd share my experience with MT oil in a 2013 BRZ, 35,xxx km.

Shifting with the OE fluid wasn't bad, a little notchy, but very stiff in cold weather (5 C, or less). 2nd to 5th on track were never a problem. Shifting down to second took a little more care, but not much more than any other cars I've owned. Overall, pretty good.

Recently switched to Amzoil ... I'm a fan of Amzoil products, but their gear oil does not work in the BRZ! Extremely notchy shifting, and almost impossible to get into gear when cold. 2nd, 3rd, 4th were ok when warm, but I actually had some grinding. The 6 - 5 shift was difficult, and needed a deliberate effort. I would not have used this on the track. As I mentioned, I like Amzoil, but I would recommend against it for the BRZ MT.

I quickly switched it for Red Line MT-90. Wow! What a difference. Shifting is much smoother through all gears. It almost feels damped. It's still a bit stiff when cold, but a little better than with the OE fluid. Of the three I've tried, this is the best by far.

I'd use Red Line MT-90 again without hesitation, but if anyone has a direct comparison with a better product I'd love to hear it. Has anyone tried Motul 300, and Red Line?

I don't mean to come off as ignorant but I don't understand why the car has to be level when filling with transmission fluid?

If we know the transmission should be filled to ~2.3 L then why does it matter if its filled level or not? Just as long as we pre-measure 2.3 L of fluid and fill the transmission, shouldn't that be fine?

That's what I did. I premeasured my oil and just filled it until the bottle was empty. I had the front end on jack stands and the car was unlevel. But I got all the oil in there and was done. I'd say if you worked at a dealership and did this sort of thing all the time, then "fill until it flows out the hole" works fine. But Subaru did mention how much to use. So IMO if you just use that amount you should be ok, provided you can get it all in there.

Reason: tranny and diff do not have dip sticks to measure. Only a "fill to the bottom of the filler hole" is what the service manual says. So if your car is on an incline or decline you might over/under fill. Which causes damage and such.

Even if you put in exactly 2.3l the tranny might have more fluid that didn't drain and you over fill or vice versa.

I measured exact qty of oil then made sure car was as best to level as possible then poured it in - all of it. If car wasn't level like to high at the front then the oil may start to drip out before your fill is done. The other mistake I made previously was put more oil in (car wasn't level) than is required until it started to trickle out - best you avoid that if you want best gear change feel - that from my experience.
