Engine noise (rocker arm?) 2013 BRZ

3 weeks ago I brought my BRZ into the shop because of a clicking/tapping noise on the driver side of the engine bay. The tech there said it was the high pressure fuel pump and went ahead and replaced it. Got the car back yesterday and it's still making the same noise. Now the tech is claiming "they all sound like that, it has to do with the engine switching between port and direct injection" from what I've seen online it sounds more like a rocker arm to me. What do you guys think? Here's a link to a recording of the sound.

Welcome to the gang, CRJ ..

Well, to my old ears, it just sounds like a FA20 engine running -

That's what I was hoping to hear! I have a tendency toward paranoia with cars so I wouldn't be surprised if I'm just hearing things.

That's a good recording of the engine switching to DI mode.

Well, with the HPFP "cricketing" and the spread out, two dual overhead, chain driven cams chattering and the dueling sets of fuel injectors popping off and the lack of sound insulation, this engine makes sounds that takes some getten used to ..

Hopefully, other ears will be along to say whether or not they hear anything unusual.

On a cold start it runs PI at idle and after it warms up a little it switches to DI at idle. You could clearly hear that switch happen in that video. If it was a rocker you would hear it all the time. Or maybe I am not focusing my attention to the right sound.

If it was a rocker arm you would be looking for it somewhere in the engine bay

My car really sounds bad at an idle now with the hood vent cut in it. People really give me the WFT look.

Sounds good to me. I know it takes some time to get comfortable with the strange noises coming from under the hood.

Crickets strike again! The tech was right. The only thing you can do is try different fuel and or stations. Its 100% normal for a twin

Which is to say, sounds totally normal to me.

There are no hints of cricket's in that clip. Not that there is anything wrong with them, but that clip shows nothing more than the engagement of a perfectly healthy DI system.
