Damn, I wonder what it could have been that would require a full long block replacement? I wonder if you threw a rod or something, it doesn't seem like it....

Unless it's some kind of an underdrive pulley, which I believe isn't the case here.

not that I'm saying one way or the other is correct, but did you do a hard break-in or a factory recommended break-in?

No knocking, banging, or anything like that? Oil pissing out the bottom is a little disconcerting. As much as people have beat on these cars doing track days in stock cars, boosted cars with hundreds of dyno runs, etc. I'm surprised to see a blown engine on the street in a relatively stock car. What was your oil change interval and what kind of oil did you use?

Hopefully Scion is good with the repairs with the mods you have on there. Unfortunately I think if this was a BRZ, Subaru would not be so kind and you might be looking at several thousand dollars for a new engine.

I read a document that was released from SoA in May just before the car came out that said in the case of engine failure, they're just going to replace it with a long block, not a short block.

This was on one of the other 100000 subaru forums, or it could very well have been on here, I don't remember.

Sounds like you played everything safe and it was a factory defect in your motor that caused this. IMO.

What was your VIN?

did you check to see how much oil was in your car after the change? the dip shits at the dealership put 4.5 quarts in thinking it was a regular 4 cylinder motor... i sent it right back in and got 2 MORE free oil changes for the future yay!

if they filled the oil too much it could have aerated the oil and cause oil starvation that way... just be careful

A short block is just the engine bottom end. Ive seen these terms used loosely so give or take some parts.

Thanks for the enlightenment! Can one of you elaborate on "engine bottom end"? Does it mean the above list less the head and cams?

These are the stories that I hate to hear about. I haven't had any issues with my car at all. First I thought I was good if I make it to 3k, but that's not true. Then it was 6k, and now I know that there was an engine failure just north 10k. How long will this go. I just hope Toyota and Subaru does us all well. I just hope they figure out what the problem is. What if 20k and 30k we are still getting break downs like this? People's warranties will be running out and engines could still be going boom!

I love my car, but I am second guessing my judgement now. I still have faith, but just wondering.

For sure it wasn't the pulley, but how dealerships can be, they may try to blame that. Or I guess they didn't which is cool.
